I'm curious as to why the pub closed down. According to Wikipedia, Murrurundi has a population of 1330. If Toogoolawah is anything to go by, a town of 961 people can support 3 pubs on the same street.

Apparently, according to the newspaper, L.J.Hooker bought the license and transfered it to Thirroul NSW. Apparently Hooker was questioned by the Royal Commission about his dealings with this and 24 other hotels.

Actually I'd like to buy a run down Pub in a country town, preferably Victoria, and open it up to Grey Nomads and all Motorhome and Caravan owners, with maybe a $5.00 charge for unpowered sites and say $10.00 for powered sites. The Pub would need to be on a large site to allow several RVs to be accommodated.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
My family came to Oz because of a pub in UK. GGG Grandfather was delivering a bolt of cloth in a horse and cart and called into the pub for an ale. When he went to leave, the horse, cart and cloth were gone. He was charged with theft and sentenced to death but due to his age was sent to Oz instead. His first 'ticket of leave' in Camden NSW was cancelled due to grog. So the 'pub' had a major influence in his life and I guess ultimately our lives too.

In the 1870's my great grandfather, Morgan Lee owned Morgan Lee's Hotel in Ballarat Victoria. After his death his widow Eliza owned the Hagen Arms Hotel in Echunga South Australia. The Hagen Arms is still running as a trendy pub today.

I have always dreamed of owning a pub,even though I don't drink..
I like the old days with out the stupid pokies, and would have a band on
every friday night..I learnt to play guitar in pubs...
wonder what they cost?
I've spent enough money on beer over the years to own a pub so for me it's the beer in me and not the pub. Remember back in the 50's when every young bloke's dream was to marry a nymphomaniac whose father owned a hotel - luckily I did neither.....
When I first bought my little terrace house in Glebe, I wanted to get an idea of what the locals were like. So I walked up the road to the Ancient Briton hotel and saw lots of ladies with curlers in their hair, shelling peas on newspaper, and enjoying a beer and a natter before returning home to cook dinner for the old man. That was back in '78 just before the suburb was invaded by yuppies (like me). Check out the Ancient Briton these days.
Keith's dad had a pub in Liverpool just after 2nd world war. Unfortunately too many old war buddies came in expecting 'free beers' & he didn't run at much of a profit.
We had the license & freehold of the Commercial Hotel, Bathurst, NSW from 1977 to 1990. We stayed in Bathurst bringing up our children, & educating them to uni. It was a good time for the family & a good time to be in hotels. But I must say that I think it is nicer now looking back on those times while now on the road, parked up in a nice camp with good company & a glass of wine in hand. Ah, this is the life.

This is the pub my grandparents ran when I was a kid. I have fond memories of it. It's changed a lot now, including the name the Axedale Tavern. It was the Campaspe Hotel when it was in my family
My Great Grandfather's first hotel was the Australian Hotel in Irvinebank Qld, he bought it in 1901. He sold it some time later after the local mining union ( later became the AWU ) boycotted the hotel because he had a chinese gardener. The hotel cook was killed not long after while stoking the fire. Someone had placed a stick of jelli into a hollow log which she put into the fire box. Related to the boycott? no one knows.
He then had hotels in Cairns, Ingham and Townsville. Not bad for a bloke who in 1873 left home in sydney at the age of 12 and went to Rockhampton by ship to work as a spare boy on a bullock waggon.
My late wife's family owned the Bass Pub near Phillip Island, Victoria and then the Wandiligong (Spelling) Pub near Bright, Victoria where she grew up on site until 18 then moved to Melbourne. She would never take me to Bright, I reckon there was a few hidden stories there but I sneaked to the Wandi Pub one time when I was going to Albury via the Great Alpine Road, on my own, had lunch and finally saw where she grew up from 3-18.

In the Late 50's early 60's my Father & Mother (Snowy & KI) owned the Beachport (SA) hotel. That was in the days of 6 o'clock closing and before the popularity of Motels, so it was either guest houses or the hotel to stay if you were travelling. Lucky guests at the hotel were allowed to continue to buy drinks under the guise of being bonified travellers after 6 Oclock in the private lounge and I remember many nights when the stories flowed freely and I guess this is part of why happy hours for me are so rewarding.
It was a time when men in particular would get a couple of long neck bottles to take home or to take to a mates place just before the ever remembered words of "Time gentlemen please " rang out through the Bar and Lounge.
It was to me the best time as we kids got to spend time with Dad and Mum as they were finished work and were home as they say before bed time.

I think that I might passed that pub yesterday, is that on the Echuca/Kyabram road?
it sits alone amongst thousands of acres of farmlands, a very unusual location.
