1080 baits in red centre?

Hi, can any one tell me if there are 1080 baits in the red centre. I am heading out for two months with my two dogs and I'm wondering if I should invest in muzzles. One is an old girl of 14 and I am reluctant to put her through any stress with a muzzle but couldn't stand to lose her because of a bait.

Yes regularly used but generally well sign posted in areas where used ,, even if used years before signs tend to stay up.

Thank you for taking the time to answer Baz, I was worrying about it, but now feel confident. We don't go far from the camp ground or parks with the dogs but I had read a horror story of birds possibly dropping a bait. P.S I still remember Julius Sumner Miller and find myself often saying in his wobbly old voice "Why is it so?

Morning Lynne,

Lived and worked in the outback most of my life.

Any time your in station country or around national parks there is a risk of baits having been laid.

Have seen many dogs die from baits over the years, not a pleasant sight, once they have swallowed a bait there is no way back.

W e travel with a much loved Labrador, when ever we stop for a break the muzzle go's on, no exceptions.

Thanks Santa, now I'm not sure what to do now you have given me this news, but think I will buy muzzles to be on the safe side. Do you put them on in the caravan parks? or do you feel they are safe enough.

When I was a young schoolboy, I was lucky enough to attend lectures by Julius Sumner Miller, Carl Sagan, and several other prominent physicists and astronomers, all organised by Harry Messel. I wish there were more people like them. BTW, I have their autographs. I don't know what that makes me, though.

Van parks and rest stops are ok, however won't let our girl off the lead in rest stops regardless of whether there are others stopped there or not.

Make sure the muzzle fits well, if it hurts whilst on the dog will try to rub it off, don't buy a cheapie, we bought 3 before we got one from a vet that did the job.

Have just crossed from NSW to WA, and pretty much every NP has a '1080 Baits here" sign, right across the country. I've heard that the baits can be spread about by birds picking them up and dropping them elsewhere, so caravan parks may not be safe.

Your right, caravan parks may not be safe, similarly driving is not safe (may have an accident) working in the front garden may not be safe (a vehicle may run into your garden and hit you) and sleeping in your bed may be dangerous (a plane may crash on your house)

However these events, like a dog picking up a bait in a caravan park, are unlikely, its all about recognising, understanding and managing risk, like muzzling your dog in high risk area, some it seems are better able to do this than others.smile

Not sure what breed/s of dog you have but for the pensioner pooch you could try a soft muzzle, might be more comfy for her/him.

Check out his store have bought muzzles from them before they are lightweight and made for working dogs not so restrictive so less likely to annoy dogs that have not worn a muzzle before.

Great advice, went to the vets today and bought a muzzle for our dog, prevention in this case is better than a cure!
