Generator won't turnover - need help

Having run generator (Onan Microquiet 3600) one morning a week ago. I returned home that night (wife watching tv) and noticed batteries very low.  Naturally gen wouldn't start.

Recharged batteries by driving with same result.

Since then four new 130AMP AVG replacements installed.

Primer light comes on but nothing when I hit start.  This happens both at the remote and at the generator.

I get 3 priming light flashes followed by 2. This is an Onan code 3,2. The code says check batteries and or connections.  These flashes came up after the new batteries were installed.  Everything else is working fine.

Also I have done the following:

Oil and fuel levels checked

Remote Control panel connections checked and ok.

Batteries fully charged with good connections

Negative and positive connections at generator good as well.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Grant

And that has happened before, One of our members of our chapter had enormous amount of trouble, took it to another auto elec. only to discover, incorrect set up.

Hi all;

Ok try the starter motor and the starter solinord , may be jamed with gunk, when you try and start the motor can you hear any noise from the started, and it could also be the starter relay. Sometimes a gental !! tap with the back end of a hammer may get things working.

Is there also a pull cord option??
Check that the motor turns over by hand, to eliminate the possibility it is seized up.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.

Solenoid seems to be okay, measured resistance at 5.4Ohms. But I'm no sparky. Starter is too awkward to get access to.

There is no pull cord option.

I know I could go to another auto electrician but all other appliances are working fine.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Grant

Grant read this link this guy had the same problem and it talks about shut off valves etc.

http://www.justanswer.com/rv-motorhome/4k5gp-onan-microquiet-3600lp-genset-winnebago-view.html

and here's the owners manual if you don't have one

http://www.cumminsonan.com/www/pdf/manuals/981-0159D.pdf

Also a code 32 in the owners manual can be slow cranking speed due to oil viscosity.

AND THIS ONE IS TOPS bugs blocking the vent on LP regulator.

Good luck

FWIW, here is a parts list:
yakimagenerator.com/generators/pdf/0981-0246.pdf

Is voltage getting to the starter solenoid? If so, can you hear it click?

If you think that the solenoid may be stuck, can you unbolt it and then try to activate it?

If voltage isn't getting to the solenoid, can you trace the starter cable back to the controller and monitor the voltage at that point?

As far as the microcontroller is aware, the generator has been commanded to start, but the controller has not sensed a sufficient cranking RPM within the allotted time. Therefore I suspect that there may be a faulty switching MOSFET on the PCB.

Thanks Dorian,

The starter solenoid checks out so now it would appear the starter motor is the problem.

Here are some manuals that I found while researching this thread. They may be useful to others.

Page 22 of the handbook lists the part numbers of the various manuals corresponding to each model and series. I would recommend downloading the manuals now rather than later. I say this because I wasn't able to find them on the Cummins web site in the usual way. Instead I used the URL provided by Baz421 and edited the part number within the URL. I suspect that Cummins/Onan may not be aware that these documents are actually accessible from their web site, so I wouldn't be surprised if they were to disappear.

I finally worked out how to access the Parts Catalogs on the Cummins/Onan web site. The secret is in the URL format, eg ...

www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/Common/pdf/manuals/981-0246.pdf

Here are two more service manuals using this second format:

www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/Common/pdf/manuals/981-0545.pdf
www.cumminsonan.com/www/html/Common/pdf/manuals/981-0546.pdf

The post with the most lnks went through without challenge, but the second and third posts did not. That doesn't make sense to me.

An onan code 3 followed by a 2 is fault code 32, cranking rpm below 180 for 2 seconds, caused by the failure of the starter to turn. Have you tried shorting the two large terminals on the solenoid, this will supply battery voltage straight to the starter. If it still does not turn over, check connections at the starter, very fiddly. The starters on these are quite flimsy, should you need a replacement, there are plenty of spares suppliers, in Sydney, Generator Power are probably the best. Try the shorting of the solenoid and let us know how it goes, should not be hard to find problem (worked on onans for over 9 years).
