I have a tandem axle 22' Roadstar van with a carrying capacity of 400kg, given that you would be carrying water, gas cylinders, roll out awning, solar cell and batteries, all things that would be above the original tare weight, is there a way to increase your GVM and have the van recertified to carry an increased payload? Do I need increased breaking or suspension set ups? I am sure I am not the only one that has come across this problem, can anyone point me in the right direction. Thanks.
To me, some Vic built caravans have a Chassis GTM on a Chassis plate, put on by the Chassis manufacturer, this indicates the weight that the chassis, wheels, tyres, axle, brakes, springs and bearings can take, but does not include the towball weight, so in theory this can be added to the Chassis GTM to get a higher revised ATM. Note i would only get a revised ATM carried out by a licenced person/Engineer or in some cases a caravan manufacturer.
If the chassis GTM is not sufficient, or the engineer is not happy with some aspect, you may need one or all of the above changed to upgrafde the ATM.
I also undertand that some chassis do not have a chassis plate, which would require more research and probably cost.

Vicroads has a complete list for trailers and carrying capacitys, and tow ball weights, Its a PDF break down for all trailers, from tiny ones to Road Trains,
Its easy to follow, and has all the info you require, and Piccys, Its what I use to build trailers. Its what Vicroads use when they pull you over for check up,
If your trailer complies with that Info, You will have no problems with Vicroads, SA maybe a bit different, But its all National now, So it wont differ much,
