A spelling and grammar lesson.

Be warned....If you are offended by people correcting your spelling or grammar, read no further.

I am not attempting to offend anyone, but it is damned difficult to get the gist of some posts for want of better English.

It's really not hard to get it right, unfortunately a spell checker will not always assist you, but a bit of though may.

If you are referring to a particular place..It is over THERE.

If you are referring to someone's car...It is THEIR car.

If you are referring to someone doing something..THEY'RE doing it.

If you are referring to a car that you own..It is YOUR car.

If you are doing something... YOU'RE doing it

If you have a pair of items, then you have TWO.

If you are going somewhere, then you are going TO that place.

If Joe is going also , then he is going TOO.

You can see from the above that a sentence such as "Joe is going TO TWO places TOO" can become unintelligible gibberish if the spelling is incorrect.

With regard to apostrophes:-

Simple plurals do not require one, ie. He has lots of horses..not - He has lots of horse's

They also signify ownership, but the apostrophe sometimes moves, ie. one horse's owner, two horses' owners, Joe's horses, Two of Joe's horses' tails were plaited.

They are also used to shorten words to form a contraction, ie. Will not/would not = won't, should not = shouldn't, cannot = can't, is not = isn't, were not = weren't, was not = wasn't, who will = who'll. The apostrophe normally replaces the missing letters, but not always.

An apostrophe can also replace the letter I in is when following some words to form a single word, ie. the phone is broken = the phone's broken, Joe is going = Joe's going, it is = it's.

The rules for using I or me:-

If you would say I in the singular, then you also say it in the multiple (you and another person), ie. I am going driving = Joe and I are going driving.

If you would say me in the singular, then you also say it in the multiple, ie. Give that to me = Give that to Joe and me.

As I said earlier, not trying to offend, but just maybe it will assist a little bit.

For all of you jokesters... Yes, I have seen all of the corny comebacks that you are now planning, but if it makes you happy, go right ahead. biggrin

I went to an old fashioned school & grammar was well taught. Being a crossword fanatic my spelling is up to scratch too. Keith thinks I am too fussy when I point out spelling mistakes on signs.

Agree with all the above,Brian, smile  However i have not seen a post on here that i have not been able to follow or comprehend, ! sometimes people use their own particular style, to emphasize, their point, It does not worry me at all as long as i understand the matter being discussed,

I myself can be a little 'lax' ?? on here at times, however if i was writing , say a resume for a Job application, or some official correspondence, i would put a little more effort into it, , in all consideration, i reckon for the age demographic, we have on this forum, They are a pretty smart bunch smile

Brian
Perhaps before correcting someone else you need to look to your own efforts, third line second last word.
Long ago I realised that not everyone be fortunate in getting a good education, many GN's may have missed out due to war or the country they came from where the education system was not as good as ours.
Some of us may not be good at spelling or grammar but at least we are willing to sit down and post to the best of our ability, they may not have enough computer know how to use a spell checker.
Cheers
David

Most proof readers would term that a typo. rather than a spelling mistake, but I am happy to allow you that.

I only have one small gripe, and that is when people refer to a duel cab ute rather than a dual cab...

Hi all I move that as of now all posts are written in simple legalese that is without the use of punctuation or other marks and without the use of capital read upper case letters this will not prevent poor grammar or eliminate spelling errors but will not allow any person to misinterpret any thing posted by any other person who may have inadvertently misplaced a symbol or mark thereby altering the intended meaning of the post it is to be noted that in the execution of the posts spaces between words are allowed and actually necessary otherwise the whole post may be rendered indecipherable for all except brian bugger I have just realised I have used an upper case letter in this post therefore rendering it inadmissable

Don't frighten away people whose English ain't too flash - the value of their comments often outweighs any grammatical errors.

Hi Brian, I will in future try to take your grammer lesson on board, to, two and too, the other part of the lesson I will refer back to. When I am away from our home computer, I use a small portable tablet with a mind of it's own. For one I do spend a little time looking for mistakes, there is generally a few. After I make the adjustments and post my reply I will then if I am not care full find all my correction posted. Thank you once again from a school dropout with no regrets, the education system was not working for me. Cheers.

My guess is that Brain will have to post perfect grammar from now on as he will be under constant scrutiny biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

What's the old saying "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"

or was it .. " people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones"..

Like many others I left school at 12 1/2 to work on the farm..

So long as I can understand the post I am reading I am happy

and I for one wouldn't know if a word was spelt right or wrongcry

While I was walking around at the shops today twenty five percent of the Australians that walked past me were not born in Australia. (2011 census)

Fifty percent of the people that passed by me had an I.Q. of less than 100.

In all of my interactions with people I don't care one little bit about how well they spell or punctuate after all to be human is to make mistakes, to learn from them and to grow from them. Personally I much prefer not to make judgements about others in any form whatsoever but instead enjoy where possible the contact.

Spelling doesn't worry me but amazes me. We take for granted an education. Imagine how hard it is for those who don't have English as a first language. My grandmother use to write me letters as a child and spelt how the word sounded. She left school at 12 years old. As a child I learnt early that meaning is what is important.

I recently came across this ad and thought how amazing, the writer obviously has English as a second language but still was able to convey meaning.

"negotibal rent aualabel now beuty room every body wellcom"

"close to station aualabel now every body well comm including all bills. Mail femal family all most well com"

There is also the old rule about 1st and last letter being right with jumbled centre letters being readable to anyone who can read. An amazing language we have!

You might not realize it, but your brain is a code-cracking machine.

For emaxlpe, it desont mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod aepapr, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer are in the rghit pcale. The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit pobelrm.

I must admit though I did appreciate the lesson in grammar and punctuation as I try to write using the education I have been fortunate to receive yet sometimes get confused. Actually I find spell check has caused my spelling to lapse and become confused due to English / American spellings.

You're not the first to bring this up brian, nor, I think , will you be the last.  It crops up periodically.

Cheers,
