My hubby and I are about to hit the road soon and are looking to improve the performance of our Ford Ranger by installing a chip/exhaust system, but we are so confused .which system is the right one ,there are so many on the market.
Hi Loulybelle,
i have a 'Chip It' chip on our Landcruiser. It has increased the torque by about 25% and as a result gives us better fuel consumption. We tow a 2.5t full van and cruise on a true 95 kph and fuel consumption is around 14L/100km. If we slow down to 85 or 90kph, fuel is between 12 and 13L/100. Wind and outside temperature will impact negatively.
I heard on the grapevine that Chip It had become insolvent. Not sure. A lot of people have fitted a DP Chip which is manufactured and distributed by Berrima Diesel in Berrima NSW.
The chip you want will allow a number of parameters to be changed, not just more fuel. Also as a safety device, I have an Exhaust Gas Temperature gauge installed. This has a function whereby based on a preset temperature, the gauge will turn the chip off (lower tune) if the exhaust gases get to that figure or beyond and turn it back on when things have cooled down again.
Another benefit of the chip is because it is tuned to give me more torque, the car will hold a higher gear for longer.
A lot of people on this forum will also advise you against it, claiming all sorts of reasons why not to install one. We have had ours installed since the vehicle was new. New car warranties are NOT affected.
I believe a chip is worth it and further more, you can remove it when you sell the vehicle and have it installed in your next one. When you look at it that way, it is a cheap investment as you can keep it for as long as you wish.
Hope all of this makes sense.

Hi I installed a chip it chip on our Colorado and the difference is amazing. Makes driving that much easier and less tiring. Recommend Chip it, after 2years and some 30k I thought I had a problem with the chip. I rang them explained the problem and they asked me to send it to them, I explained that we were off in 10 days and they assured me I would have it back in time, which they did. The problem was that I taken it to a company to have it dyno tuned and they set the tune far to high.
When I talked to Chip it there was no talk about warranty of any cost to me they just asked where and when I purchased it.
Gooday, I have a DP chip and 3 inch exhaust from Berrima Diesel fitted to my PK Ranger and I think that it works very well, gives me heaps of power and tows the van a lot easier than it used to.
