A couple of days at Martin's Bend

Arrived at Martin's Bend, east of Berri on the River Murray in South Australis. It's got this name because it's a bend in the river but who Martin was I have no idea. We're staying here for a couple of days so I may get the chance to find out.

We left Kuroonda in a howling gale. Fortunately it provided a tail wind not a cross of head wind so that was not too bad although there were a couple of moments when the van swayed because of the wind but Di managed to control them pretty well.

Kuroonda was an RV friendly town and was Loxton but unfortunately Berri is not. When I asked at the tourist info centre where I could fill up the caravan's water tanks I was told that there was no where in Berri where I could do so for free but if I bought fuel I could fill up the tanks at one of the servo's. The lesson's pretty self evident - heed it if you're going to Berri.

The campsite is fantastic; despite it being free it's really well looked after.. Bushland next to the river. Fantastic stars away from the lights of the city. Di and I lay on the banks of the Murray watching the stars until it got too cold and we scooted inside the van. Butcher birds are everywhere. They've got a great sound. Supposed to be possums as well  but I haven't heard them yet. There's a toilet block but that's it. No showers, no consumable water on tap, no electricity other than what you can generate yourself. Need to double up on the deodorant I think.

Staying here for a couple of days before heading west to Leasingham - hopefully I'll get some time to get some photos up - found the USB cable.

Thanks for the comprehensive report, D and D. I'm sure the info will benefit many other travellers (including the deo tip hehe).

We stayed 28 days at Martins Bend and had no problems in finding water ,there is a free water stand in the main street by the loos.
I have to say the imformation centre does not volenteer this imformation

Great place to stay and lots off our travelling friends agree

Beautiful place Martin's Bend, but not as nice as when I lived in Berri. We spent many a weekend there during summer when it was so hot you could fry an egg on the pavement. We've just returned from 9 days in Berri, but we stayed at the Caravan Park. It is well kept and one of the best parks I've stayed in.

Loxton Golf Club has powered sites available, not many, with access to showers and toilet. We drove by the other day, no one on the course and only one van there.

Barrie, went to the loos in Vaughn Tce (which I assume is the main street) but couldn't find a tap of any sort. Asked a few locals and they didn't know what I was talking about. Even so, there's no where to park the van and fill up the tanks without blocking the road. Maybe able to fill up a couple of jerry cans. Its a shame really because this is such a great site. Luckily we have met a local who has offered to supply us with water from his rain water tank at no charge. I still think people intending to use the Martin's Bend campsite should fill up with water elsewhere (Renmark of Loxton are not to far away and both have such facilities) or wait until arriving in Berri to fill up their fuel tanks and at the same time top up their water tanks.
