St Patricks Day Triplets....

Our resident back yard Bobtail had triplets yesterday, first thought there were only two but saw the third one today.

Mother and babies doing well and taking handouts, Dad keeping a low profile somewhere....

No the father doesn't take any role other than mating Alan, but does lay with them in the sun etc like their Mum does too.   Mum eats the afterbirth off them after giving birth but that is all.

Dad is laying low somewhere, I saw the Mum heaving a bit before the birth, I think the three were kicking the hell out of her from inside.  Some have 4 so hope there isn't a 4th hidden somewhere.   The babies are self sufficient right from birth, eating drinking and sun basking to warm up, so at least Mum doesn't have to worry about feeding them. hmm

Hope she is having a good rest somewhere after that mammoth effort.  They are sexually active at about 5 years and on average live for 20 years if predators don't get them first. cry

One of the myths about  Bobtails (Shingle Back Skinks) is Snakes eat Bobtails, not the other way around, see this link from Brian Bush's website;

"Congratulations Vic" I bet you are only one of very few Grey Nomads, who have had Triplets this Year.
I bet this "Happy Event" will slow down your future travels,
Just think, you have all those years of Education ahead, for you and the Family.
We kicked Our Little lizards out Years ago. LOL

Mum and Dad Bobtail have taken up long term residence in our back yard KJ and have been here for years, they probably reckon they are onto a good thing with water and the odd extra feed on hand now and then when the snails/bugs are getting low.

Very hard to find when they hide though, even burrowing under litter, you have to be careful where you step when watering the garden, more to be careful of now.   Saw Mum and one of the new troops sunning themselves this morning, the others must still be in bed, LOL!

The Old Man hasn't shown his face for about a week, I think he's probably scared of a bif under the chin from Mum after the pain she went through having them, he is no threat to the little ones though, he wouldn't dare !! wink biggrin biggrin biggrin
