I would like to point out two things nobody else has mentioned re the rego sticker problem. In Qld I could not renew my Rego because I did not have the renewal papers. There is a different number for paying online/Post Office however you wish to pay either for a six month Rego and another number for a twelve month rego.
I couldn't claim a pensioner concession online either. I could not keep the paperwork and try and use it six months or twelve months later.
THAT DOESN"T WORK. The numbers are one offs and wouldn't work again. The renewal notice gives you one off numbers that only work for that one time.
As far as I can see you cannot get away from a system that must inform you when your Rego is due.
Get rid of stickers for sure but there should also be some provision to make sure the third party system covers the third party who is involved in an accident with someone who takes the chance of not being stopped and being found with no current rego.
Yes we have Hi Tech Licence recognition cameras but they don't cover everyone and every car.

Interesting....In NSW, the billing number is the same every year, and that's all you need to get your details online.
As for the third party...Every year when my rego gets near its due date, I get a plethora of CTP offers from a lot of insurers, so it would be pretty hard to not know it's coming up.
Why would the licence recognition not cover every car? Surely the rego plates are similar enough to be read.
I mean that every car does not pass a recognition camera every time you drive. You have to drive past one to have your rego checked. I know Police cars also have the recognition cameras. You can drive around for a long time without passing either. Some one will try and get away with no rego so you do need to make sure innocent parties are covered even if a driver has no rego.
I believe that in NSW if you do get injured by an unregistered vehicle you can still make a claim for your injuries there is a common fund that covers you, that must be maintained by the green slip insurers, but if you are the unregistered driver the insurance company can make a claim against you for injuries you have caused.
It wouldn't make much difference to the low lifes that drive around our area unregistered, they wouldn't have a cracker to their name.
Cheers
David
I am pretty sure that the cameras that are all of the place check rego as well as speed. I know the one just outside of Yandina check number plates as does the ones near the Caloundra turn off and near Moby Vicks (Shell Servo on the Bruce Hwy)
Now that we have no rego stickers in Victoria the Highway patrol cars all have numberplate recognition plus the roadside vans , I see them quite regularly and they do get plenty of customers.
