The trouble is a gold detector capable of finding small nuggets costs around 5 grand.
My El cheapo detector has so far unearth seven tent pegs and 300 bottle tops.
Another way to find gold is to use an underwater metal detector and look in the water..
- Best beach's are the ones that have a hard pack clay under the sand, as to deep a sand layer and you have to make large hole's..
does it work yes...
- I would not bother doing the beach sand as most councils have contractor come thru and run their machine's over the sand every few day's and the most popular beaches everyday..

We bought an expensive gold detector and to date have also found 1 tent peg buried very deeply and the usual 300 bottle tops, but getting closer to the big find every day

l am wondering if you have the discrimination set correctly.
I use a Garrett ace 250 which has the option to lock out things like a ring pull and bottle tops and to date no gold but have found a few dollars worth of coins and the Grand Children love using it they have found heaps of coins in caravan parks around the jumping pillow.
I have used it on numerous beaches but have not yet recouped the cost of the machine but it is good fun and usually attracts a bit of an audience, still hoping to find my 1 kg nugget.

I was given an ancient Garrett brand detector.
The detector dish hasn't a scratch on it.
Friends Ex was a "fad" fanatic. He's out of the picture
and she wanted it gone.
Yet to try it but at that price how can I go wrong ?
Looking forward to finding my first tent peg.

The problem with discriminating against aluminium (ring pulls etc) is that Al is very close to Gold in electrical resistivity ( just 0.0000000038 ohms/m difference), the gold detector measures phase shift differences due to this resistivity, so blocking Al could also be blocking Au

did you do a course when you bought the detector?- its well worth it to set you on the right path

Dad had a VERY Profitable Little system..
- A Small home made Floatation rig that held a Small Honda Motor and a Compressor/hooker setup..
- a tank of gas[About 1.2lt] would last him about 4hr's.. and let him search a Lot of the Beach..
If your from Melbourne and ever to the beaches from Middle Park all the way to Brighton you might of seen him on the beaches Back pre 2007..
If he did not Pull put a ring or 2 from each dive session something was wrong..
Most of the ring's are the one's that are lost in the horsing around in the water, you know the ones that get put on the chain's so they don't get lost..
A few Old coin's have also shown up.. Afraid to say No holey Dollar's..
so the stuff is out there..
Re metal detecting for gold etc..
- You have to do your research..
Find out where the main strike's have been and go prospect in those area's..
- IF you get a chance Make sure you go into area's that have had a Burn in them.. The burn's remove all the blackberries and make it easier to get in to those hard to get place's..
A few years ago after area's of Rushworth got burnt, I know of quiet a few prospector's that got into the gullies and did quiet well for themselves.. [ DO NOT light any fires to CLEAR out an AREA]
There is gold out there you just need to find it..
Also make sure that the land you are on is NOT part of a Mining Lease..
