Blue Mountains, Scenic World.

Hi all,

We are heading off to Corryong from Brisbane later in the month for The Man From Snowy River Festival. We plan to go down via Katoomba and Oberon. Never been through that area before and my question is, if we arrive at Scenic World early in the day (with caravan in tow) is one day enough to have a look around? The plan would be then to head to Oberon late in the arvo and book into a caravan park and stay there for a couple of nights and have a look around. Visit Jenolan caves, maybe drive out to Bathurst and do a lap or two. We would then head down to Canberra and onto Corryong via Cooma.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Is scenic world what they call the 3 sisters these days? I think it is.

I was stationed at a nearby RAAF base for many years back in the 70's and that place was our favourite hang out, well there and Kings Cross.

Back then it wasn't such a huge commercial thing and was easy to see everything and have lunch in one day.

Same deal with Jenolan Caves - one day is plenty.

Now if you said you were on dirt bikes and a tent I can give you some ideas that will take a week to explore.

If you can get a mining map there are plenty of shale mines in the area to sneak around in too.

All the other towns are nice too except for Bathurst, never did like that joint.

Cheers

I think a day at Scenic World would be enough, unless you wanted to do some long bushwalks. Mind you it's a few years since I've been there and there is an extra attraction since. Jenolan caves, a day is also enough unless you want to do more than 2 caves and bush walks. It was hard to get into the more popular cave tours the day I was there.

Nice area and you could certainly spent more time if you wanted.

One day would be ample to see most things at Katoomba. Scenic World has three options to view the valley, skyway, scenic railway and the other way up from the bottom is the other skyway. We spent a good day up there recently with our Grandchildren. If you like to do lots of walks and there are plenty there you will need more than one day. Scenic world is a short drive from Echo Point. We took the scenic railway down and walked around to the other skyway. Very interesting walk , showing how it used to be a mine and several exhibits on this very pretty walk.

We came back up and then did the other skyway that takes you across the valley. Spectacular views through the glass floor.

It's great fun but not cheap.

Pam

I lived in Oberon for 10 years and it is a very pretty little town but not a lot to see except Jenolan caves and maybe yeranderie if you are into ghost towns. Bathurst is well worth a look with plenty to see including Mt Panorama and the motor museum, the fossill and gemstone collection and Abecrombie house to name a few. When you leave Oberon are you planning to go to Canberra via Goulburn. If you are the drive down via the Abercrombie river is one of my favorite drives in Australia although a couple of steep bits and tight turns if you are towing a big rig. Also a nice quiet camp spot at the Abercrombie crossing. We are in NZ at the moment but will be back in Bathurst from the 24th if you would like a cuppa and chat.

Thankyou everyone for your comments and suggestions. I'm a newbie to this forum and find it great that you can get first hand knowledge from people who have been there, done that!

tezza,
Originaly weren't going to go down via Abercrombie River but now that we have decided to do a stop over at Oberon, yes we will go that way onto Goulburn. We might even spend a night at the crossing that you mentioned.

Cheers

It is about 1 km west of the 3 sisters (still on Cliff Drive).

A nice drive is down the Megalong Valley - great views, not sure what down there now (most likely commercialised) by now.

The area is certainly worth a visit but is now getting expensive Adult ticket $35.00 and Concession $32 per adult but that gives unlimited number of rides then a drive along Cliff drive will give you some great views

Make sure you take some warmer clothing for visiting Oberon, can be a might 'chilly' as it moves into autumn/winter
