Gday all iam looking at purchasing a iridium 9555 sat phone before this mongrel Abbott cancels the 50% Subsidy at the end off the month!! Has anyone got one even another comment on different phone would be appreciated. Cheers Bowsie
Is he a mongrel because he is removing the ridiculous subsidy or because he is generally attempting to get us out of the huge debt that the other mob committed us to?

Maybe it would make the OP happier if Abbott offered him a free phone and billed his grandkids and his great gandkids for it..
We recently bought the Inmarsat Pro in preference to the Iridium primarily because it was about half the price and because we spend the majority of our time up north there isn't any problems in getting coverage. In saying that we've had excellent reception south of Sydney as well. To call out costs are comparable however the Iridium apparently allows your normal mobile sim card to be used making calls to the satphone cheaper. We mainly wanted the phone for emergencies and not for day to day use and couldn't justify paying the extra for the Iridium. Cheers Dave
We used Globalstar in Central Aust and Top End. We had about 60 - 80 sets,,, generally good coverage but NW of Alice was an issue years ago,,, probably not now.
I find it very disappointing when disgruntled voters describe the PM with such inflammatory words. Surely this site is not the place to air political hatred.
I'm glad to see some sensible replies to this question.
we bought a second hand Iridium from Iridium. It had 6 hours use and was ex dept education. Came with all accessories including a magnetic outside antenna and car cradle. All in a waterproof carry case for around $800.
We use a Telstra casual $10 sim in it with international roaming enabled and it works nicely.
