firstly thank you all who have replied and helped me with Nissan patrol 3.0 ltr inquiry please keep the advice up, now looks like I have to be careful as to a caravans ATM and vehicle ATM ? if the vehicle says braked towing 2500kg and a caravan is 2300kg for eg what do I need to look at,years ago you would just hook your van up to the old holden and away you would go ,not any more, not trying to sound silly just green, any positive advice always welcome --we don't have van at moment
max towing capacity of vehicle or towbar determines max weight of caravan, look for a rating plate on the towbar which will give max tow capacity and max download(ball weight). these weights can NOT be exceeded.
van ATM(aggregate trailer mass)= all up max weight of caravan
van 2300kg? is this ATM or Tare? if Tare what is van ATM?
GCM= gross combination mass, set by vehicle maker and is max weight of vehicle(loaded) and van(loaded) must not be exceeded.
vehicle GVM(gross vehicle mass)= max vehicle can weigh loaded incl driver and passengers.
hope that sheds some light for you
frank

ATM and GVM and GCM meanings - These are taken from Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule Definitions and Vehicle Categories) 2005 they are the definitions as used in legislation.
AGGREGATE TRAILER MASS (ATM) - the total mass of the laden trailer when carrying the maximum load recommended by the Manufacturer. This will include any mass imposed onto the drawing vehicle when the Combination Vehicle is resting on a horizontal supporting plane.
The ATM is set by the manufacturer, if you want to raise you need to get an authorised inspector to examine the trailer and certify that the trailer will carry the higher weight.
GROSS VEHICLE MASS (GVM) - the maximum laden mass of a motor vehicle as specified by the Manufacturer.
This is the maximum permitted weight of all other vehicles.
GROSS COMBINATION MASS - value specified for the vehicle by the 'Manufacturer' as being the maximum of the sum of the 'Gross Vehicle Mass of the drawing vehicle plus the sum of the 'Axle Loads' of any vehicle capable of being drawn as a trailer.

I don't know if I should have started a new post. I am in the process of registering our caravan. I have read Vehicle Standard Bulletin 1 and still can't see where the RTA is coming from wanting to use the GTM as the GVM, I know legislation. I loose out on the ball weight in my payload. The bulletin states that the GTM is the mass transmitted to the ground by the tyres of the trailer when coupled to a towing vehicle and carrying the maximum load recommended by the manufacturer or importer, approximately uniformly distributed over the load bearing area. IGVM= vehicle tare mass + maximum payload My GTM is 2008k, my tare is 1700 and the ATM is 2200, but the GVM is going to state 2008k NOT 2200k?
i had a bit of a look to see if there has been any discussion on this subject would love to hear your thoughts.
Paul The GVM is the maximum permitted weight for a vehicle. The ATM is the equivalent for a trailer. End of story.
There is no ATM field in the database of any of the road traffic authority. The ATM is the figure that that should be inserted in that field for a caravan.
