Vacuum Sealers

Thinking about buying one of those Vacuum Sealing gadgets to preserve food

Question:Are they any good, and do they get used, or is it just another gadget that's sits at the back of the cupboard gathering dust.

Also would be interested if there is a particular brand to look out for

I have a Sunbeam one and love it.

I get a whole lot of different fresh vegies, steam them, mush (not mash) them together, put serving sizes in bags, flatten then vaccume seal them and put in freezer. When out in the playground I have mixed vegies on hand that can be heated in the bag in hot water or as I do, thaw, take out of bag and heat in dry fypan. YUM.

Good to store meat, fish etc as there is no freezer burn and keep longer.

I'm interested in this too, although our Avan Cruiser is starting to get overweight with 'must have' items.
Has anyone tried the cheaper ones from Ebay that start at $50?

We bought one from the camping store, used it for this trip and I've packed it, stops any blood etc from meats leaking anywhere, I vacuum and froze some meats and just left some in the fridge. While in larger towns I can stock up on meats. I hope to use it and not just throw in the back of the cupboard but time will tell I suppose.

I Have the Sunbeam one as well really good use it all the time at home, but too large for us to carry it with us in the campervan so I bought a battery operated one to take away with us, so if I find a nice country butcher when on the road I can renew my meat supply my meat supply and seal it.

I have the Sunbeam one too. I don't use it often, well probably every 4 weeks or so. All meat gets sealed and either fridged or frozen. Brilliant if you want to marinate your meat as it pulls the flavours into the meat. It is no good for bread or cakes or grated cheese!!(or anything that has a soft texture as it squishes it).I prepack all sandwich meat as well.

 sufil Hi,

If You use the impulse button (Sunbeam units)You can take enough air out of the bag and not squish the bread etc. too much. Takes a bit of pracice.

Mike.

I bought one at a caravan show, then took it in the caravan around Australia without using it once. Left it home this trip, waste of space.

What works very well instead are snap-lock bags, you can get most of the air out of them and they are great for freezing, or storing fresh or pre-cooked food/vegs/fruit/ muesli/dry foods/tea bags/sultanas...... they come in several sizes, love 'em!

Put a drinking straw into the bag, zip almost closed, suck while finishing closure and you have vacuum packed.

Some cheap bags may not always maintain seal.

At first they were called 'seal-a-meal' and we would catch 'springs' (Chinook Salmon in BC talk) clean them, vacuum pack and immediately freeze. Guests thought we'd ran down to fish market in the AM when we bbq'd them almost a year later. Have been using them since '89 in the home and on the boat. If we decide to caravan we'll have on on-board.
