What to do with passports overseas?

We are planning a week in Singapore later this year. It will be our first time overseas.

What is the best way of handling your passport? Keep it on you at all times or leave in the safe at the hotel?

Thanks,

Collo.

We always carried ours in one of those fabric wallet things that have a string round your neck and the wallet sits under your shirt - pretty secure and you always have it on you. After a while you don't even notice it being there.

I agree with leaving them in the Hotel safe.

Only carry what you need with you.

When you say belly bag do you mean a hidden one or do you mean a Bum Bag..?

- unless the bug bag has a Steel trace thru the strap its a waste of time..

The around the neck in a cloth Pocket is the best way.. Also a good spot to carry your credit card etc..

Did that all thru out USA.. for all 90 day's..

Please don't use a bum bag for important things....have heard stories on a number of occasions of people finding that after unzipping the bum bag that someone had slit it from the bottom and taken off with stuff.....usually happens in a crowded situation  (trains, rush hour etc)    nothing with a strap that can be cut etc....hidden under clothing is safer I think.

Just to digress a little...when in Singapore make sure to leave plenty of time for the Gardens by the Sea,  really enjoyable.

Have a great trip!   cheers   Capricorn

Hello Collo - just make sure you make a copy of all your documents to leave at home - let someone know where they are then if anything happens to your 'stuff' overseas you will have copies at home and then you can quote numbers etc. I also carried my passport with me in the hidden wallet plus money.

Think you will find that the hotel will hang onto your passport, they did ours

Singapore is a relatively safe City. I would suggest you leave Passport, credit cards and surplus cash not needed for the day, in Hotel safe. Singapore has a hot climate and I usually wear shorts in any Asian country. I have an internal fob pocket, large enough to hold a Passport, with a zip across the top. I also have a money belt which looks like an ordinary belt but has a zipper running the length of the inside. Cloth bag around the neck is ok. Someone mentioned take a xerox copy of your Passport and Credit Cards. Make 2 copies. Leave one at home, take one with you and leave in your suitcase. Rather inconvenient when you are explaining to the Australian Embassy that your Passport has gone missing and you can't contact the person in Australia holding the xerox copy. Or you are at the American Express Office reporting your stolen credit card and don't know the number !!

When you want to access your fob pocket, money belt or cloth bag, do it in a private place. You don't want anyone seeing you access your hiding place. Asians watch foreign tourists for any slip up, and once they see where you hide your possessions, they may target you. Don't give them the opportunity. As I said earlier, Singapore is a relatively safe City. I lived in the Philippines for almost 20 years. That is a Country where you must be on your guard 24/7.

My daughter had her "bumbag" slit open and her purse stolen whilst on one of the transit stations in Singapore last year. A real pain for her as she had to cancel her cards and also lost a sum of cash she had in her purse.

I personally lock my passports and valuables in the hotel safe and only carry a minimum in my pocket or bumbag, but wear my bumbag on my front not rear.

My overseas security habits ..

Under shirt wallet for passports & extra cash.  Slung under arm rather than in front .. more comfortable & less noticeable.  With me always.

Second Under shirt wallet for other important stuff like spare CCards, E Tickets, Travel schedules, Tour vouchers.  Usually leave in room safe.

Use room safe for all electronics not in use .. 'Puter, camera, phone, and all wallets when in room.

Take a special wallet in the front trouser pocket (never back pocket) with a bit of cash, CCs in proctective 'anti skim' covers.  Leave my usual wallet with unnecessary cards etc at home.

Cargo pants great for carrying itineries, maps etc in the extra leg pockets.

Always pick up a hotel business card when I check in (can never remember the address or often the name of where I'm staying).

Have copies of essential documents in luggage along with key phone numbers .. eg, lost/stolen cards, health insurance, tour booking company etc.  I also have a small notebook (& pen) with essential information with me always.

If using a day pack I wear it in front & not on my back.

I agree that Singapore is a safe place.  I have wandered about the place solo at all hours & never felt threatened.

Ditto,

Just come back from China and Singapore, off to Japan at the end of the month.

Gardens by the Bay is a MUST see place.

Don't bothe going to Raffles for a Gin Sling, unless you have a lot of dollars to spare.

......................................................................................................................................

I flew with Singapore Airlines  .. A great carrier.  Sorry don't like Qantas.

We received a wad of free & half price vouchers so the Gin Slings at raffles were (just) affordable.

Really enjoyed the 'High Tea' at Raffles.  Far more than just tea, cakes & sandwiches.  At half price was good value.

For our trip to Changi we hired a Taxi for the day.   Was great value & the driver ran the AC while waiting for us so that the car was nice & cool.

Sentosa was a bit run down but I understand that it has since been updated.  The chairlift over to the Island was spectacular as were the Orchid gardens .. can't remember the correct name of the gardens but the orchids growing 'wild' were fantastic.

Collo,
Singapore is my favorite destination in the world, great people, great food, great sights. I think ( but could be wrong) that if you are out shopping and you want to buy Duty Free, or at least duty claim back at airport, you will need to show your pasport. Also apart from the well known places to visit if you feel up to it, there is a lesser know island, called "Pulau Ubin", get there from a ferry down around Changi Airport area, takes about 10 minutes on the ferry. The only form of transport on the island is bicycle, but the scenery is fantastic, and the monkey's are great in the wild. Enjoy your trip.
