We arrive 5th May early from Tas. We have decided to go to Lakes Entrance Victoria caravan park. Is it easy to tow a 14ft caravan avoiding tolls. Will our Navman be kind. We have been told that it's hard getting out. Any tips for a less stressful get out of the city. We hoped RACT still did a navigation car to get us out but they no longer do it. Any suggestions?
Don't use the tunnel system to start heading East, your direction of travel. Toll applies through the tunnels until Toorak Road. Just have a word to a worker on the wharf when you get off the boat and they will advise the best way along the Princes Highway. You can get back onto the Monash anytime after Toorak Road and then just follow the signs.
Enjoy the area. Gippsland is a real jewel in Victoria and hopefully the fire at the coal mine will be out by then.
When you get of the ferry, drive down the esplanade then to St kilda junction, follow dandenong road until Waverly road, follow that and you will come to Warrigal road, turn right and onto the freeway. No tolls from then on and you miss most of the traffic.
Can I suggest when you come of the good ship "Spririt" head down beach road to north road, hang a left down north road and then follow through to the Monash freeway, right onto the freeway then continue to Lakes Entrance. Very easy drive with no problems, I have just done the trip twice over the last month at the same times you will be.
Can I also recommend the North Arm CV Park when you are at Lakes. A nice small park but friendly people with no connections to the big chains.

Thanks everyone. We will try and stay calm. Ha. Will probably head inland while it's not so cold. We have to go to Port Macquarie as we head north. Where is a nice camp from then on not too long a drive? (not necessary coastal)
Follow Beach road, lovely drive all the traffic will be going the other way, at just before Brighton take North Rd all the way, it becomes Wellington Rd on to the Monash, should be straight forward.

I wont try and explain the route. I have TomTom and I guess the navigation principles are the same. Usually when I hit Melbourne from Tassie I call on a friend at Cranbourne, in Melbourne's east. Not being familiar with Melbourne although I've been there several times, I punch in the Cranbourne address. Mr. TomTom asks if I want to avoid Toll Roads, and of course I punch in "yes". The route is then displayed avoiding Toll Roads. I would assume Navman has the same capabilities...

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Although I have a fundamental objection to toll roads, when touring I make sure that my E toll account is topped up & follow whatever road the Navigator takes me.
The extra cost is only a tiny part of the total trip costs & may even be negated by fuel savings.

and anything to reduce stress levels while navigating through cities is to be commended. We too keep eToll account, and don't hesitate to use it in Brisbane, Sydney or Melboourne. When you are driving through cities, on unknown roads, towing a large van, We prefer to use our navigator (in conjunction of course, with a map)
