What bird is that?

I went for a walk through the Gunbower Island forest this morning, and there were black birds there everywhere. To start with I thought they were crows but they were not, a little smaller, not squawking, and when they flew off they had white under their wings. They were really pretty when in flight. Just wondering what they are.

Could be Currawongs. About the size of a magpie with yellow eyes. Noisy at times.

Hope that helps.

Cheers

On the other hand, maybe it was a Dollar Bird.

Could also be white winged chuffs. They have red eyes.

Thanks guys, not sure about the colour of the eyes. The name currawong rings a bell. Oh well they were majestic as they took flight.

I was thinking apostle bird but maybe not.
Coming across from St George to Goondiwindi today I came upon a large flight of hawks. They were circling around like vultures above a dead kangaroo on the road.
They must have dispersed when the saw me coming. A beautiful sight, if only I had my camera ready.

Watching QI the other night on telly, I learned that 'sea gull' is a misnomer. Gulls are not sea birds but land birds that live near the sea, and they are called simply 'gulls'. So there. :p

Thanks for that Billeeeeee, I had not thought of a sea gull, they could well have been, it is warm up here so maybe they just had darn good tans.

Now I am going to have to go and ask one of the locals exactly what they are, as there are many thoughts to the name of the birds. I did not even get a photo of them as they are quite timid and flew off as soon as I started walking towards them. Great bush walk through the island though.

They are called Chuffs, and we have them here in Victoria, a very sociable group of birds.

Gloria and Daryl - I always spell it "chuffs" - it sort of suits them - stole a sausage off our bbq once!!!!!!! It was hilarious watching them fight over it!

Found it, talking to the park manager, armed with brochures, the bird as Johnq has kindly noted is indeed

A white-winged Chough(do).

Pheww another mystery resolved.
