generator

Hi everyone, I have just purchased a Yamaha generator and need a little help. The manual says to have the generator at least 1 metre from a building so I am presuming that is a caravan as well. We are going to buy a serafini chain tomorrow and wondered what length we should get.

Also, where do you put your generator when travelling from A to B? Do you empty the fuel every time? and lastly does anyone have any photos they can send me to see how you have set up your generator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy Rocket...Firstly, ''GREAT'' choice of Gennie...They will out perform anything else on the market.

I have never taken to much notice of being a metre away from the van but I do have the exhaust pointing away from the van...

I loop a chain through the handle then loop the chain through our free standing Solar panel and have the chain loop through the A frame..

You can't see the gennie in this pic but it does show the solar panels and the generator is around the other side of the van....the chain is 20 mtrs long

and we have had no trouble with thieves

When the gennie cools down it just goes in the back of the Cruiser...and we don't bother emptying it out...we did put it inside the caravan one trip but I prefer it in the back,,,

If any one is wondering where this is...its out at the Bowenville reserve freedom camping (-4 in the morning...Brrrr ...the genie was working so well..was the 1st time we had tried our electric blankets...bloody excellent

Hi Rosco, Thanks for replying. What sort of chain do you have? Have been told to get a chain that bolt cutters can't cut through and at 20 metres that would be nuts. ok at 2 metres though cost wise. What do you do when it is raining also. thanks.

First point that I would make is that there are not too many chains that a decent set of bolt cutters won't handle, but there are not too many upportunistic theives walking around with a set of bolt cutters either. Second point it the weight of the chain, a decent, say 10mm, hardened cable will weight just a fraction of the chain and is virtually impervious to bolt cutter attacks, and provided you get a hardened chain, about the only way to cut it will be with a disc grinder. Third point is that if the owner of that van expects to get any power from his solar, he needs to get it out of the shade.

A chain only protects you from the opportunists.
If someone really wants your gear, they will take it.
We travel with a small dog & she is our best anti-theft device.
We have a light chain with a small brass bell every meter or so.
It threads through whatever we leave out at night.
We are sure our dog will tell us if anything moves.
If going out for a walk etc. things get put away.
Oh,yeah. We have a Yammy genny as well. Top bit of gear.

Chopit I hope you keep that little dog under control as she looks as though she could do a proper chainsaw act on a leg. Better idea, no chain for her don't give the crooks a chance. Love your little dog mate.

Hi Rosco, a dumb question... So can you run electric blankets with the gennies?  Never thought of that until you said. We have just purchased a new gennie and trying to think of things to use it for besides topping up the batteries, teach us for being to self sufficent! haha . Think ours is a 2 kva, will need to check with hubby but pretty sure it is. Cheers fiona  (whitey2)

Yep!!! I guess that the gennie would certain run the electric blanket, but running the gennie when you need the E/B would certainly upset your friendly neighbours, incl. me. Most freedom campers are very understanding re gennie, up to a certain hour.
We had a special box built for the rear bumper bar of the van to house our gennie. Do not have to lift it to high. A blessing. Use to lug it in and out of the van.

Regarding the use of electric blankets, I run our blankets over night from the inverter. I have 2 x 120Ah batteries and a 2000w inverter. The blanket is only rated around 80w.

There used to be available on eBay a stainless steel cable and a locking system that also had a alarm in it meaning if some low life tried to sever the cable the alarm would go off.

I hope that this helps.
