I reckon they ride in groups for the same reason chickens flock together, sheep mob up, kangaroos mob up and so the list of not very bright creatures goes on ad infinitum. They have the same right to use the road as any legal vehicle and are also bound by the same rules but nobody has got the rule bit through their melons yet. A squirter bottle with ammonia or even vinegar pulls them into line. Now all jump on my head and tell me you can't do those sorts of things. Cheers.

Yep the road rules apply as they and we are a vehicle!

I, me , myself, moi and my ugly identical twin sister love cycling, but realise that a cyclist is the vulnerable one at all times.

However I love taking the mickey out of the lycra lunies.

Love the group up theory too! Maybe they think if they get in the middle of the pack they get protected by the ones on the outside.

My pet observation is (from observing the eediots on the way to, at and on the way home from work) - no matter what they are doing, whether it be walking, running, cycling, driving and yes even swimming with accounts of Lap rage, their attitude is always the same "Get outa my way I am here"!

Surely there is an ATTITUDE test available to check out where some people are allowed to be and what they are permitted to do?

Ever tried a nice walk along the "SHARED" walk/bike paths in Melbourne along the Yarra at go to work, come home from work times? 100Kg + hulks on bikes at est. 40Kph bullying their way along past families etc. NOT nice!

Road users are funny that way, and not just cyclists. If you make a mistake on the road and fail to give way or whatever, the offendee often carries on like he/she's been personally abused and had his/her sacred rights trashed. They take umbrage way out of proportion to the "offense". We all make mistakes, and accidents can easily happen to anyone, which is why I drive defensively, always expecting the unexpected. It has saved many bingles over the years. But I never abuse the person in the wrong. It could easily have been me. Anyone who gets behind the wheel and expects all other drivers to be perfect is a fool.

I used to live in Sandgate Qld on the main Esplanade. A nice flat length of road ideal for cyclists. BUT a big BUT there is a cycle path along the road but on the weekend these so called Cyclist use it in droves. The law is quite clear in Qld. If there is a Cycle path you must use it.

No these idiots even ride round the roundabouts along the front without giving way to traffic as per road rules, go along in mobs sometimes three or four wide, fail to give way and ride with those cleated shoes which mean they cannot quickly disengage their feet from the pedals. So bloody unsafe they should not be allowed to wear them on a public highway.

Brisbane Council spend millions on bike lanes and bus lanes around town so it's about time that bikes and cars were totally separated from each other. THEY DON'T MIX.

Neither do pedestrians with cars and trucks and bikes etc. Keep them apart.

What ever happened to the "Indian File" rule? Remember the local Sergeant coming to our school and drumming that into us, now, bloody cyclist are up to 4 abreast and in Qld. we have to give the outside rider a metre (3 feet) of space! On what damn road in Nth. Qld. can we do that?

I see the main problem being no police on our roads here in WA, have you EVER seen a cyclist being booked by a copper?

It seems that I'm not alone in hating the sight of these ( As someone quoted ) Melons on the road.

Here in Perth we also have KM's of cycle-ways running beside motor ways, all with a white line painted down.....
just so the Idiots don't have a head-on I suppose.

The thing is that, I have very rarely seen any cyclists on these special pathways,
they're all to busy giving motorists a hard time, spread all over the roads and some of the "packs" have so many in the Mob,
half the time I've seen them spread out to the white line, with a string of cars behind trying to get past.

Taking a vote, I think it's clear...... Keep the "Dicks" off the roads altogether.
Us motorists pay road tax's through licenses etc, what do the damn cyclists pay for. ????

As someone who had to attend an inquest into the death of a cyclist who rode out in front of my vehicle it is a very traumatic thing and colliding with them can happen so quickly.

The inquest which exonerated me didn't occur until 3 months later and the waiting time took a toll on me, it is not a nice thing being involved in the death of another person. Even now, 40 odd years later, I am very apprehensive when passing a cyclist (or cyclists), especially if they swerve in front of you to miss a pot hole or road grate in front of you.

I notice many do not like riding on cycle paths but prefer the roadway, not sure if this is because of the joins in the cycle path or if the path passes houses the possibility of someone backing out of their driveway without seeing the cyclist.

It is a problem for both cyclists and motorists and I don't think there are any easy answers.

To answer the question, yes, cyclists alone or in groups must obey all road rules if they are on the road. They may ride 2 abreast if they wish but also should follow the "keep as near as practicable to the left" rule.

In a vehicle you are also obliged to follow the rule "don't enter an intersection if there is a risk of collision".

These two rules ensure that the only way to get damage without fault is to be hit while parked (legally)

There is no rule that says you can run down a cyclist no matter how stupid they are being.

They hide under the fact that they think no one can trace them....why not register bikes and give them registration plates just like everything else on the road.....also in my day you had to have a rear view mirror on your bike so you could check traffic coming up from behind. I used until recently to have to pull a trailer some weekends with a ton or more of animal feed....great to come round a corner to find the whole road covered with lycra clad idiots riding 5 abreast in a group of say 50 or more. The whole thing is getting out of hand.

not only registration they need insurance also, I wonder how many insurance companies would insure them, knowing how they ride on our roads.

are you aware that it is illegal for any person over the age of 16 to ride a bike on the footpath in WA, having said that in your case you would get away with it cos you are a clown.

I would not think you would get booked for it, to be booked there needs to be a policeman/woman on the streets to start with, the odds are in your favour.

Snappy way to bring these boofs to heel is to get in front of the group and progressively reduce speed until they are bunched up behind you then a quick, momentary couple of notches with the hand brake and watch the rear vision mirror closely and see how many arms and legs you can count. My best is none to good so don't bring out the worst in me. Cheers.

Last year I was going to the beach, it was early so I thought nice easy run. Not too far down the road I was stuck behind a group of bike riders taking up the whole lane and some of the other side of the road. So saying some rude words under my breath I settled down to wait for a passing op.
After about a mile a vehicle came up behind me with flashing blue lights so I pulled to the side.
They went passed and were then stuck behind the afore mentioned bikes who were on both sides of the road. On went the siren and bikes melted into 2 abreast Police went past and so did I.
They pulled up a little ahead of me and the last I saw was the lovley police stopping the bikes with quite stern looks on their faces.
I was still smiling half an hour later .

Personally I reckon if there were more 6kg bikes carrying one 80kg person and less 3000kg cars carrying one 80kg person the world would be a better, cleaner & safer place. wink

It is also illegal to ride a bike on a road whilst holding the lead with a dog. How the heck can a lazy clown give his dog exercise?

Yep, not often coppers around here, especially not when the hoons are out screeching their tyres. Never hear cyclists doing that do ya???? disbelief
