G'day forumites, I have a little problem with one brake drum.
I replaced the axles under my 012 jayco sterling the other day with straight ones with bigger bearings and in doing so had to have the drums replaced as well,we used existing backing plates, pads, magnets etc.
all went well with three drums but one , it was tight too so the mechanic ajusted it to fit, went home and packed the van and left the next day leaving Windsor in sydney to go to Wagga Wagga some 450kliks,on arrival at the van park I decided to check each drum after a days run ,three were ok not hot, but the one that had to be ajusted was VERY hot to the touch.
So I jacked up the wheel and spun it thinking the pads were rubbing but no the wheel spun cleanly, respun the wheel and applied the hand brake (no grab)respun again and applied the tug brake (no grab).checked north/south and east/west for wabble (none)so tomorrow I will disconnect the elect brake and see if the magnet has let go inside the drum or is faulty.
My question too you guys is,is there anything else that I nead to be aware of or fix.
Thanks Rod.

Yes wheel bearings might be binding or perhaps the tyre is under inflated.
Sounds more like brake drag though. Did you do the spin the wheel test with the brake controller plugged in?
Always an idea to have that test done with everything else in the ON position. That way you have things powered up same as operating on the road.
If it drags then check wiring, look for a pinched or damaged loom.
If it is a wheel with the handbrake cable, then be aware that under load the cable can be tighter than when the wheel is jacked up.
Make sure you still have plenty of slack in the cable to allow for suspension travel which may tighten the cable and apply the park brake when driving.
Maybe that drum is the only one that's working efficiently. I've burned fingers on drums and discs before, and that's where no fault existed (except my own stupidity!) Warm drums haven't done much work, maybe they need to be adjusted up to share the load. Just a thought.
Hello everyone, found the problem, the handbrake was adjusted up to fare, readjusted and everthing is ok. Thanks to everyone that gave advice maybe this will help somebody else one day.
Thankyou all
Rod
