You are never going to get an unbiased "opinion" on any subject.

An opinion is just that. It is a wholly personal, emotional interpretation which may be veracious in full, in part, or not at all.

As can be seen regularly on this forum, a vast gamut of opinions, which all of their proponents believe to be fully accurate, but which are in direct opposition to each other will be offered up on almost any subject that is raised.

As to the question: I have no knowledge of either, but would be interested to find out, so will watch with bated breath for the diverse (and definitely biased) "opinions" which may be forthcoming.

Hi Mr Red...

My 'unbiased' two bobs worth...

I have used the hema and always found it great. I found it excellent for back road exploring as it had all the back roads well marked.

You might like to consider this option as well before making up your mind...

I no longer use the Hema device as I opted to use the Maps apps that are now available on the IPad. I find the larger screen a better option and have purchased a strong screen mount.

Both Hema and VMS have IPad Apps and all the maps that are on the smaller device are available for the IPad (and probably more).

Good points Mike. If you can justify it run the Mapping Apps on an iPad but be sure to buy the model with the GPS in-built, that's the one with G3.

all I know is Hema walked all over my tomtom. No surprise. Last year I was in real Aussie bush in WA, no phone coverage etc. a mate lent me his Hema, it tracked where I was going and showed me my route back . it was brilliant. I felt safe.

just my opinion biggrin

We have the Hema HN6, Also Two Garmin Devices.

The Hema has two programmes of navigation to choose from.  Street  Navigation, and 4x4 Navigation

City Driving with Turn By Turn instructions (Visual and Spoken) just like the common GPS street navigators

4x4 Maps.   Very detailed and you can choose different maps, of  which  there are quite a few  Maps to choose from. You can Download maps as well.

The 4x4 maps have no Spoken guidance on them.  Just your current position and Track Tail. Or Route/Waypoint Navigation that you have compiled.

Once you are out of the city or off the main Hwy's or down a bush track, you realise how good The Hema HN6 is.

Takes a little bit of learning and I would suggest getting some tuition  on using it. I think you might find some helpfull Youtube  Videos on using it.

Regards

Mike

I too have a Hema 6 and would not have anything else. one of the very handy things on it is Camps Australia wide is already on for your use.

Mine came with Camps 6 and upgrade to 7 was free it also has a very extensive POI list, very handy if in a large town or city to find all sorts of places for example

shopping, doctors, entertainment etc.

A friend bought a VMS and 2 weeks later bought a Hema 6 because he didn't like it.
