Howdy folks, Yes Glenda and I are setting of to cross the Nullabor in march and would like to know if anybody has any recomendations about free or cheap camps along the way and if there are any good things that we should see as we go , I know there should a few good places to visit.
Absolutely have to camp at Koonalda Homestead (it is in your camps book) turn off between Nullarbor Roadhouse and the SA/WA border. You are supposed to pay national park fees at Ceduna. Approximately 14k north of the highway, no facilities, so be completely self contained. Couple of pics for you.
Great place if you are into car cemeteries, also check out the sinkhole about 7k further north
T here are so many free camps along the way. We stayed at the lookout on the cliffs can't remember the name but it has a good size area for several vans. Don't get too close to the edge. Last trip in May last year some of the cliff stops were closed. We also stayed at one about 20klms from Balladonia . Some have toilets some don't . We just stop where we see there are several vans parked.
One trip we stayed at the roadhouse at the start of the straight... Culgera or some name like that. It was ok though the amenities were very basic and not very clean. Last trip we just free camped and there are so many to choose from.
We will be travelling over the nullarbor in march also, perhaps a cuppa or cab sav may be on the cards , just look for a austral followed by a volvo truck !!!
If your in Perth , give me a call and maybe we can share a cuppa , we live just north of Perth
Hi orge, not sure if you are aware but anybody with an internet connection can see this site so your phone number maybe known by a lot of people, would be better if you did an edit and removed your ph no and in future contact other members by PM and then pass on your email address or ph no

Just adding to what Wombat said, also a good idea to remove surname from profile (so if you say you are going away people with ulterior motives cannot track down your home address etc) and also full date of birth to prevent identity theft etc. For any newer members who may not know how to do this profile can be accessed by clicking on "User Details" on dark blue line at top of forum.

Cheers for now Ogre.
Hi Guys. I've done the round trip once in 2010. Can't recall all the stops I made but one sticks out. At the WA/SA border on the SA side, is a truck stop, about 100 meters from a BP service station and Motel. I used it travelling in each direction. I don't profess to be an expert on the Nullabor but I also planned to take about 5 days doing around 300 km or so a day. I'm not much of a scenery guy, so I kept driving. The road was so good, hardly any traffic, my air conditioned MH ran like a charm, AC/DC filling my ears, I was surprised to note I was doing about 800 KM a day. Apart from fresh water, I carried 20 liters of Diesel, having purchased it in the "Big City" at a lower price. Fuel is a lot more expensive on the Nullabor. You will be told to watch out for Roos, Camels and Emus. I only drive during the day and only saw one Kangaroo on the way over and back. Still it pays to be cautious. Have a good trip...

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Watch out for wide loads. Sometimes the pilot is not always where he/she should be. Best thing is if you see a wide load coming towards you, get on the radio and ask how wide it is. Any more then 4 metres you will need to get off.

good grief - I may never get my husband away from this place if and when we ever get to the Nullabour - how exciting
Don't forget... NO water available on the Nullabor...
Some places "may" let you fill up (depends what side of the bed they got out of)...
Some places have tanks - "Boil water before use"...
We always fill water tanks for kitchen/shower use, and carry cube water for drinking...
And NO FRUIT or VEG or PLANTS (or any boxes/containers that have contained) at the Quarantine Points...
The Nullabor is an experience in itself...

One other thing, Don't take your favorite HONEY with you, ( the type that's in the jar I mean )
That's a No No , and will be taken off you, They will tell you that they are protecting the local Honey producers, I reckon they are all only....... "sweet tooth's"
have a great trip, and make plenty of stops, it's a hell of a long way across "the sand patch"
Edited information..........
If you require Emergency help, the Police and Border patrol at EUCLA monitor CH 40 U.H.F. radio.
cheers K.J.

good info there KJ, there is also a police station at Yalata, if you also need medical attention go to the police station and he will take you too the clinic around the corner, unseen by all travellers, I know this because I was air lifted out of there by the RFDS a couple of years ago, if it was not for the clinic nurse and the RFDS I would not be here today, now do I hear Dougwe, dazren & Vic cheering
The Yalata police station is just off the highway on the right as you travel towards WA.
The price to play the Nullarbor Links was up there with the best value I have spent in my last 4-5 years on the road, including a 2 year trip around the block. I don't play golf, but I did this course & it was so much fun, & broke up the crossing, making it an adventure (event) all on its own. Don't play it if you wish, or if you think the green????? fees are too expensive, but I think you may miss out on something special. PS. I bought 3 clubs at the Red Cross in Kalgoolie for $5 each, a putter, a 3 iron, & a sand wedge, I don't know what size they are, they were the first I saw. Don't know if that was expensive or not, someone might be able to tell me if I was ripped off.
