I have a TrailerMate that I use all the time.

Pack it away as you normally would. That is the best bet. Take the other one as a spare.

Hi bab600,

I would take the old dolly wheel for the next couple of trips till I got used to the new setup.........Be Prepared is the motto.

If the Trailer Mate is secure on van and you are comfortable with it traveling there, then leave it on....But if it is liable to theft, then pack it away for your peace of mind. It is really up to you... Cheers, Sarg.

I carry mine clamped on, but you must secure the base as the leg can drop under gravitational force.

Also make sure that it is high enough not to foul kerbing etc.

Hello Babs..

Don't travel with the Trail-A-Mate attached unless you secure the foot plate in the 'up' position.

If you don't secure the foot plate it will drop and hit the road - affectively stuffing the whole thing.

If you wish to leave it attached in the jockey wheel position - buy one of these cable security kits on eBay..

The kit not only secures the foot plate but stops it being stolen.
('Stops' equals - deters honest thieves)

I have our Trailermate fitted permanently with a restraining strap to keep from dropping down and also drilled a hole through the securing clamp to fit a good sized padlock. I have discarded the Jockey Wheel because with around 250 to 350kg tow ball weights the sloppy fitting clip on wheel is just about useless. I also have the square plate fitted permanently with a Plastic Detergent bottle as a Weather deterent for the upper Jack assy.

After sorting a few leakage problems over the last 9 years I am still happy with the jack set up.

We have been using the Trailamate for over 2 years . Don't carry the jockey wheel .

I always carry it in the back of the tug when travelling . Have heard of a couple dropping down while on the move .

I would pack it away for travelling for two reasons theft and I have seen a jockey wheel come lose and if it happens it nearly always ends badly

To the best of my knowledge it has always been illegal to leave a standard jockey wound up & in the clamped position ; hence the swingup style.

This being true the I imagine the same would apply to the trailermate.

I have seen where the jocky wheel has unwound & torn the wheel off, the create gourges in the roadway, even picked up the wheel off one on a trip & it was lying in the middle of the road so there is a danger in doing so.

Dont know if securing the leg of a trailermate would be acceptable, pack it away & all is good.
