How does a company that exists solely in CyberSpace, and whose assets are essentially just bits and bytes plus a few servers (?), spend US$500m let alone lose that much?

Consultants. Same as our local councils and state governments. Then when it stuffs up you blame the consultants.

Ah! The old consultants their the people the boss brings in to borrow your watch to tell you what time it is . Seen it time and time again they come in talk to all the staff take the workers ideas put them of their official letter head attach an itemized 21 day account that John Landy couldn't jump over , hand deliver it at an exclusive lunch venue to a very grateful CEO and management team . Naturally the report is accompanied with a list of escape clauses just in case the workers got it wrong .

That's life in the fast lane.
