Post Office holding mail?

We are leaving home in QLD shortly until December'14 and have been told that it is possible to get in touch with the post office of the town you would next be staying in and they would hold your mail for up to a week, waiting for pick up. Does anyone know if that's correct, or have used that system for mail collection whilst travelling? Thanks R-J

I think they hold mail for 30 days . We've been 16 days once . . . . . no problem .

Same question I was going to ask really. I know there is someone in Gosford NSW that holds mail for all Grey Nomads then forwards to you wherever you are going to stay for a few days (via P.O. who know it is to hold) but I dont have any details as to how to get onto that person.

Anyone know?

Yeah, you get it sent care of that post office, and they will hold it, so my local tells me. Best to get in touch with them beforehand, and let them know though, as some are privately owned enterprises (agencies) so best to be sure.

I am lucky in that my mail gets delivered either to my daughter's address in QLD, or my son's in Victoria, they usually ring me when it arrives, open it and tell me what it is - depending on whether I physically need to have the item or not - if I need it they will put it in an envelope addressed to a post office I will be at within the next two weeks, addressed to me, care of the relevant post office.

I get most of my correspondence via the internet these days, so there is not much surface mail. I have a damaged eftpos card at the moment, a real pain, and the bank where I am now have just changed my address temporarily to allow the card to get to me directly.

I know people who buy larger prepaid envelopes, have a friend or family membeer collect their mail from home (or a post box), and send it on to where the traveller is going to be within two weeks (allow time, as mail in some country areas can be pretty slow).

Be careful about the Post Office. Several times over the years, in different places, We've paid to put mail re-direction orders in, yet not all of the mail was re-directed. They always seem to miss some, with the excuse that there was a new postman on the round or whatever.

The best way to find out how long they'll hold it for you is go to your nearest PO and ask them.... best wishes!

Post Office re-direction orders DO NOT cover parcels - that is anything the postie on his bike doesn't deliver - so if you are expecting anything like that - be aware - it will most likely be taken to the nearest post office that the Contractor is going to (not necessarily nearest to your home!), a note SHOULD be left in your post box at home to say it is at such and such a post office, will be held for up to 30 days - then returned to sender.

I try to get bills sent by email.. I opened a separate address so it doesn't get mixed or deleted with normal mail..
I tried having mail left in large letter box at home and family pick it up every second day or so.. BUT the snails
eat the envelops etc...Talk about snail mail..

Something to ponder as well.
You can't get mail redirection if you live(d) in a caravan park.
I'm still trying to find out why. "It's policy" is the best answer they can give.
I call it "discrimination".

That would probably be Landbase, operated by Jan Baetz. Only reason I know this is that her brother was my dentist when I lived in Sydney, and he reminded me every time I said I was planning to join the grey nomad ranks!

I'm still trying to find my new Medicare Card which was sent out end of November even though the old one didn't run out till February.
Went into Medicare to change address mid January only to be told new one had already gone out in mail which makes the old one expired.
She gave me a paper printout until the lost in the mail one turns up.
Had thought I was still on redirected mail time, but it hasn't turned up here at daughters.
Time to check with son again.

I do this routinely. It's not necessary to arrange it with the PO beforehand, just have your mail (letters or parcels) addressed to your legal name c/- whatever PO, then when you arrive at the PO tell them your name and that you're expecting letters/parcels addressed to you c/- the PO. Have photo ID ready. The only time I would call a PO would be to ask whether my expected mail has arrived so I don't go there for nothing.

For the locations, phone numbers, and correct names of post offices and agencies consult Australia Post's website. What we know as a post office is usually known as an LPO, and a postal agency a CPA.

We used Landbase at Gosford. See their website www.landbase.com.au

They provided a very good service

Get your mail marked 'Poste Restante' when it is sent to the Post Office where you will pick it up from. That basically means 'hold until collected'.

If you put ash - from the bbq or open fire - in the bottom of your mailbox, snails won't go near it!!!

 Rosie,

That is exactly what we do. We arrange to redirect our mail via Aust Post to one of our sons address and then we leave 6 or 8 overnight express envelopes with him. He opens our mail and if urgent, gives us a call and / or we then arrange for him to post the express envelope to a nominated post office,. Mainly in a small town, so no hassles re parking to pick up. Has worked a treat for us over the years.

You will have to ensure that whoever is sending your mail on knows which Post Office to send it to and I do believe that the Postal Service now wants some form of ID such as drivers lic. no. to be printed on the outside of the envelope so as it can be checked before the envelope is handed over.
I have a friend post all my mail on in this way, I leave her all the envelopes set up and ready to go and as I have very little in the way of mail anyway she forwards it on once a month when I tell her where I will be. Works out a lot cheaper for me than using a mail service for as few as 1 or 2 letters a month.

Yes, we used the Poste Restante system while we were in Darwin a couple of years ago; worked well for us. They hold the mail for up to a month.  Check out this website (last paragraph on the page) and type Poste Restante into Google for more info.

But I agree with some of the other posts - redirection of mail can cause issues. Each time we've redirected mail we have "lost" mail.

Agree with you Sherio. Have ordered a new Medicare card today as previous card lost in redirection somewhere.
