Tyres for Tug and Tow

Did not want to hijack hendo's thread on the general forum about van tyres, so have started a new one here in techies corner.

Cupie asked:

My Patrol runs on Cooper TIRES & the van on Dunlop TYRES.

Do I have a compatibility problem?

We are due to replace the tyres on our patrol, and are looking at Coopers, but the van tyres also will need replacing soon, and we don't necessarily want to match the tyres (as we did when we first purchased it)  We want a good quality truck tyre, 265/75R16, and have had quotes for Maxis, Hercules, Falken or General Grabber.  Does anyone have any thoughts about these, bearing  in mind that we do a lot of off road driving with the van, and plan to do the Gibb River Road this year.

To answer Cupie's question re compatibility, from what we can gather, with three years on the road, you should not have compatibility problems as the "trailer" is a separate vehicle.

I have cooper AT3 on my pajero and after 20,000 Kms so far so good, Just have to rotate the tyres from the front to the back every 5,000 Kms as the weight of the caravan on the back wears the back one out pretty quick. In a nut shell, will i purchese an nother set of 'coopers', yes.

We have B F Goodrich A/T KO light truck 265/70R16 on the Patrol and Goodyear Wrangler silent armour 265/75R16 on the van these would not be compatible on the vehicle unless all 4 tyres where changed from the van to the Patrol.

What size tyre's are you running on the Patrol?

Patrolist, both our truck and van size is "265/75R16".  We aren't too worried about compatibility between the truck and van, we will have one spare on truck, two on van, and will only cross them if/when we have a puncture.  currently we have Goodyear Wrangler's as you do, on both truck and van, but apparently they are no longer in production. They have been replaced by Adventura.  Are you towing a Kedron X Country?

It was Cupie that had the compatibility question.

................................................................................................................................................

Just to put my comments above in context  ...

It was just a poor attempt at a joke ... A play on the words  TIRE & TYRE   ( My Van Dunlops spell it 'Tyre' & The USA Coopers use 'Tire' spelling)

.................................................................................................................................................

The serious bit is that I need to get a new spare now.

I intend to replace the 4 van Dunlop tyres in the next 6 months or so.

Given that, I need to decide now what type I will go to so that my spare will be the same as the rest.

Any recommendations?

I have had good service from the two sets of Dunlops & am likely to stick to them.  Since 1999 we have done more than 150,000km on bitumen roads.

I changed the first set before heading off on a 15,000km trip, about 5 years ago with an estimated 20,000 km of legal left & the current ones are about at that stage.

The recent 'lifting of tread' issue was on the original (14 year old) spare.

It is unlikely that I will do many long trips in the future ... Just short trips up & down the East coast & maybe South East Qld.

I currently run 5 year old Dunlop 185R14C 8ply on the van.

You will be ok with the sizes you have on your van and vehicle as they are the same, mine aren't, the 70 is 70% of the width and the 75 is 75% of the width so the 75's are a taller tyre.

I thought they wranglers were still available, the silent armour were only fitted our van in September 2013.

Yes we are towing a Kedron CX3
