Given all the positive hoohaa recently on the forum about Tassie being such a fantastic place and a 'must visit' destination, I thought I would check out the pricing should I decide to travel there.
I had done this exercise about four years ago and was astounded then at the cost to take the van across and back. Today's exercise has just about convinced me Tassie is definitely not worth the trouble - the natural beauty may be worthwhile ... but the prices are exorbitant. I don't care how much "free" camping (albeit most are 'small fee') I could do there ... I can do that on the mainland as well without spending this huge fare.
This quote below is for 'low time' travel each way and is a cabin with two single beds, bathroom facilities and not much else. The cabin alone is $312 for ONE NIGHT's use !
I do realise this has been done to death on the forum - but despite all those who are going to respond by telling me how fantastic the state of Tassie is - it is definitely not worth anywhere near this transit price on the boat across the ditch.
i just did the same thing about a week ago, 21.5 ft van and the Prado ,a cabin over and back return to Melbourne $1980.00, cheaper to fly and hire a camper, or give it a miss, for that money I could drive nearly three quarters around oz.

there must be something wrong with their pricing because we went over the Christmas before last and I think it was about $850 / 900 return , night cruise with a cabin. It could be the length of your rig as ours is only a coaster at 20 ft and only takes up one car spot. pretty sure a car and van would be double that.
Your Coaster would be looked at as your car and may have got over for the $85
where if you pull a van like we do its the car that gets the $85 price ,caravan is full price
Dont worry there is a hell of a stink over here about pricing on the Ferry
You can get food entertainment and a room on a cruise for just over $150 a day and thats with 3 meals
food on ferry last time we were on was $30 for crap ,we ate at home before leaving and stopped at roadhouse for breakfast
I have no idea if thy dont want you to come, or us to leave lol
Wow!!!! Unbelievable cost - thank heavens we have a motorhome - cost us $667 RETURN - (we used the Ocean Recliners - pensioner price $17each way/each - we are short, so no problem - not good if very tall though).
And the price you quoted has got a Federal government rebate in it as well!!!!

That's the reason we spent 15 months in Tassie as it cost us the same and when we go again it will be for a similar time span as we did 5500ks and still did not see everything. We can't wait to finally getting around the "Block" even if it takes a few years and cruise back to Tassie, loved every day of it rain, hail, wind, snow and sun what a great place.
The car or MH cost is currently $89.00 up to 7 meters. Height doesn't count. They ask height so they know where to put you on the ship. But $2,000.00 return would put a lot of people off.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
Normally a 9.5 hr trip. Depends on weather though.
As most people sleep at night they have cabins or a section with sleeper seats as the boss of the boat doesn't want people laying around all over the place. Get caught and you walk the plank. Doesn't work as a lot of people take up the public seating areas laying around anyway and seem to get away with it. Some people even had cabins when I came across during the day trip last Sunday and most annoyingly people laying around in the public areas not leaving much sitting room for others.
The deck areas for vehicles wouldn't be very nice at all on a cold windy trip. Ones you leave your vehicle you can't go back down to it, for safety and security reasons.
Overall, not a bad trip. Cost, well, the longer you stay either side the better the cost becomes I spose. You speak to people here in Tassie and they point out that it doesn't cost anything for a person to drive on roads in any state of OZ so why do people pay to travel on the water, charge for the vehicle maybe, sort of like a toll thing, after all the water is being used like a road travelling from one state to another.
Gee, only been here since Sunday night and sound like a Native Taswegion Is that a word

We two have been over to Tassie, twice, and the last time just under $1800 return. Had a day trip over and a night time cruse back ( had to drive home from melbourne to Mildura ). The food was just ok, I'll eat any thing, but the the food was over priced and meat had been stewed, soaked in water and re heated. yuk. We didn't even try breakfast and could not wait to get off the ship and have a big feed of the big 'M'.At least that would have been fresh, hot and cheaper and i rearly eat from the big'M' house.
We would love to go back to Tassie, fantastic place, but for the cost, but after two trips up to Alice Springs and also Darwin in 2013. $1800. + $50.00 for food for the trip over and back AND nothing else, well i know where my money would go. Sorry Tassie, great place except for the cost of getting over there.

SORRY TASMANIA,I will not be visiting.Simply put ,being a Pensioner I cannot afford the cost of the trip ,my motor home is 27 ft long and for that I have to pay $1700.00. If the fares were realistic I would be staying for six months so I could see all Tasmania has to offer.Six months at say $500.00 per week spent in fuel, food, accommodation (c/p) equals around $13.000.00. lost to the Tasmanian people and businesses.Going by the costing module on the booking page on the internet, there seems to be a cut off point around the 20-21 foot in length ,from there on you pay the freight truck rates. I think there needs to be a special costing class for motor homes /caravans,they are not transport vehicles carrying goods to make money, they are vehicles carrying people to SPEND MONEY..........cheers Peter.

Just had a quick look - for us, on a night sailing, motorhome at 9m and over 2.1 high, around $400-$500 from DPO-MEL. We can only get on 3 weeks from now, or in early April for a night sailing, didn't look at days. I really, really hope we don't have to wait til April, another 2 months may just be the end of me.......
