Does anyone turn off their gas hot water system, to prevent it constantly heating up when not needed, ....

We are newbies to Grey Nomads world,,, (and loving it already), but just need some feedback please.

How far out each side, is acceptable, for our rear pole carrier tube. (Its like a storm water pipe.)

Thanks a bunch, in advance for any feedback.

 We only turn on our HWS (Suburban) 14 mins before we want a shower and as soon as we get out of the shower we turn it off..

There is no need to have hot water on tap all day and they are very gas expensive...

 Hot water service agree with every one else,pole carrier tubes I have mine inside the van width,I would be carefull  being any wider than the van.

DITTO,why waste gas or electricity,we only turn on the hot water in the evening  around 8 o'clock for  one hour so we have hot water in the morning and then turn it on half an hour before we have a shower.If you have any more questions ,just ask,some one will give you an answer.......Cheers Peter

.. along the same lines as previously mentioned ..

Once in the morning for shaving/dishes/and a quick shower if required etc .. boils up in about 7 mins then I turn it off .. and  then again in the evening if required.

If only a minimal amount is needed, then quite happy to just boil the billy ..

One of my considerations when cooking or boiling water on a gas burner, to look closely at the flame you're cooking on .. you might be surprised at how much you can turn back down the "on" control and save gas. Many folk simply turn the gas on (fully open) and cook away .. works with me !

I turn mine on in the late afternoon or evening for shower and dish washing. It takes 25 minutes to heat up, then I jump in the shower, after which I turn it off. I still have plenty of HW for dish washing. My HW tank holds 27 liters...

 In NSW, VSI-5 (Vehicle dimension limits) Section 6, PROJECTING LOADS & EQUIPMENT allows the load on a vehicle to project 150 mm either side of the vehicle providing it total width of the load does not exceed 2.5 metres. I would think that other states have similar regulations. VSI sheets can be obtained from http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi_dl1.html

I guess that turning the system off and only switching on before use could extend the anode and element life, but why get out of the van open the panel and do that 20 mins before you wash dishes or take a shower? Seems pointless to me.

 If using the electric heating facility, then turning it off may prolong the element's life, but if using gas I fail to see that the element would benefit, and the anode won't be affected either way.

Most electric setups can be turned on and off from inside the van either at the power point or via a separate switch, the burner on most later gas ones can also be controlled from inside.

We only turn our HW on just before showering, it's hot enough for the dishes without pre-heating. At the moment in Broken Hill we sure don't need hot water, it's about 42 degrees

 We have a 12v/LPGas Suburban HWS and the switch to turn it on is right beside the bed so it is easy to just switch it on 14 mins before showering..biggrin
