RE: WHO IS THIS

It looks as though he was the recipient of an Iron Cross. There is significance in where it is worn too. Something about which button it is worn nearest to means something too I think.

Am I on the right track if I think this gent comes from Germany?

Is that a Victoria Cross he is wearing, Santa?

Just doing a bit of thinking whilst waiting for your reply Santa. If it is a VC he is wearing, then it had to be between 1850s and WW1. That is not a Boer War uniform and you have said that it is not Crimean War so if the uniform was red, then it may be the Zulu War.

If it is not a VC then I am totally wrong. Maybe it is Merv Hughes at a premiers 21st birthday party. biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Yes it is a VC DMax, his uniform would have been red, your certainly narrowing the field.

Definitely not Merv Hughes.biggrin

OK Santa. If his uniform is red then I think it could be the Zulu War.  If it was the Zulu War then I think he was the bloke that Michael Caine played in that movie. If it was him then he was one of the few that survived that battle. He had a really strange name, well probably not for that time, but for now.

Am I close?

No, can't help with a name, someone else will have to finish it Santa. I remember reading about him and he was one of the survivors and received the VC. He died pretty young from some hideous disease a few years later.

If what I have guessed is correct I could google the rest but that is not in the spirit of the game. Originally I thought that was an iron cross and it was only looking at the uniform and finding out it was a VC that gave me a clue.

Well done. It is a difficult one.

That's him Sheba, well done, thought some of our ex military members may have picked up on him.

Major Gonville Bromhead VC (29 August 1845 9 February 1891) was a British Army officer and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for valour in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to members of the British armed forces. He received the medal for his part in the defence of Rorke's Drift in January 1879, in which a small British garrison of 139 soldiers successfully repulsed an assault by some 4,000 Zulu warriors. Bromhead was portrayed by Michael Caine in the film Zulu, which depicted the battle.

Born into a notable military family, Bromhead was brought up in Thurlby, Lincolnshire. He entered the 24th Regiment of Foot as an ensign in 1867 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1871. Bromhead's battalion was deployed to southern Africa in 1878 and subsequently served in the Ninth Cape Frontier War and the Anglo-Zulu War. He spent most of the remainder of his career in south Asia, where he was promoted to major in 1883 and saw service in the Third Anglo-Burmese War. He died in 1891 in Allahabad, India, at the age of 45.

Thought I had replied guys.  Don't know what is going on.  D-maxer got the first pick right.  She was a very young Jackie Kennedy.  The second pic. was Tyrone Power, and this last one, is Harrison Ford.   You guys can decide who goes next.

I'd say it's yours Sheba, you picked Harrison Ford.

Harrison Ford is an American actor. His films have grossed more than $5.4 billion in North America and more than $9.3 billion worldwide, making him the seventh-highest-grossing actor in North America. Wikipedia
