Windows 8 seems to put a lot of people off. I've noticed there are some real bargains to be had with laptops loaded with Windows 8. One Toshiba the other day with all the bells and whistles (and speed) that I need was only $450. I felt like buying it there and then but I've heard so much negative feedback about W8 I declined. Dammit.

I've spoken to a lot of people who have "heard" Windows 8 is a dog, the strange thing is none of them have ever used it.

Had a play with it myself the other day, no big deal, its different, however everything you need is there, as a result I'm having a new desk top machine built, the operating system will be Windows 8.biggrin

DON't be put off of Win8, as Santa says most comments are from people who have not used it.

The ONLY problem I find with Win8 is the tile startup screen and that can be overcome just install this FREE program http://www.classicshell.net/downloads/

When Win8 starts up it is in the tile screen just press the Windows key and hold the X key and you have the option to pick your desktop and wow you now have your desktop back just like Win7

Having said the above I still prefer the FREE Classic Shell program, puts a shell icon on your taskbar just like Win7's start button.

I read yesterday that win9 is not far away.

Yep, they reckon 2015, sales of W8 are slow, its being used on less than 25 million PC's at the momentbiggrinhttp://www.smh.com.au/digital-life/computers/windows-9-slated-for-2015-as-windows-8-tanking-20140114-30rlg.html I don't see a problem, those adopting 8 will be offered a cheap seamless upgrade to 9 when the time comes.

The only way to judge and operating system is in it's uptake within users. Xp was the last decent windows and microsoft had to release 8.1 because of the confusion and dissatisfaction from users with 8. Don't quote me on the figures, but read, only 2% of win users have taken up 8-8.1. Now microsoft are going to release win 9 later this year because of the catastrophe win 8 is. The biggest windows system in operation is still XP, which holds a large majority of users and support for that disappears in April. Microsoft are trying to force everyone onto their new systems and take their money again for junk. It's not a good look when the majority of Microsoft users still use xp which is over 10 years old and they have released a few since, none successfully for customers, just Microsoft profit growth.

When you look at the tablet market, win sales are below 2% of the market, apple 6% and open source android the rest. The savings are huge and are representative of the direction of computing, as there are more and more open source systems being applied to tablets and smart phones which operate in PC's, using the one system. Microsoft and apple are years away from that because they can't fit their last century code into the system configurations and chip sets used by modern technology.

Windows uses huge amounts of computing resources and space, they never remove things just add more to the system, making it so slow and cumbersome it can't possibly work in this day and age successfully. Until they overcome that problem, much cheaper and easier to use, what 90% of tablet and smart phone users are, open source.

The claim only those who haven't used win 8 are against it, is the opposite to facts. Every forum and review states failure on many fronts, the state of market uptake and microsoft themselves, by having to release a supposed new fixed system within the year, called win8.1 and now 9 within another year. It will be interesting to see how they overcome what is an insurmountable problem today of size and usability. They said win8.1 would fix the problems, what happened.

The huge reduction in prices of dedicated windows PC's, phones and tablets is proof of their failure in the market. No good wasting money when you know 8 is being dumped and then relying on win9 and hope it works, better than the last 4-5 releases. When everyone else has moved on.

Give it a rest for a while NP, we get the message loud and clear, you don't like windows, your rants are getting a little tedious.

Fact, Windows and Apple work, over 98% of people in the world use and are happy with their operating systems, Linux users account for less than 2%, I can see why your on a crusade, must be a little lonely being one of the minority.biggrin

This threat is about tablets, so your percentage claims are false, as are your claims everyone is happy with windows and apple. If that were the case, there would be no problems and Microsoft would not have released 8.1, or the coming 9 so soon. Nor would there be so many forums and media outlets over flowing with complaints.

What gives you the right to determine what is posted, or what help is, my posts are according to the forum rules and not personally abusive and derogatory as you make the best effort to be. Those who aren't interested in what I post, don't read it. There are many things I may not agree with on this and other forums, but if they are not in my interest or within my knowledge I say nothing, just as other logical mentally secure people do. For some reason you seem to be offended by most of what I post, which is not my problem, but yours. Only make comment when it comes within the realm of my knowledge. It was someone else who made a comment on android and others supported that conjecture. All I did was present facts to support the status of open source, compared to propriety systems in tablets.

It's extremely tedious when people who have no idea what they are talking about, try to make out they have knowledge, then proceed to make themselves look stupid.

Been in a very small minority all my life and love it. It's called evolving individuality, freedom of thought and refusal to be enslaved to ideological idiocy. Whilst being responsible for my footprint on the planet. You can never be lonely when you are free, only those trapped in mediocrity are lonely, even though they are part of the crowd.

One thing I've learned over the years is never reply to a salesman who asks, "What do you want to do with it?" Back in '91 as the 386 was being released, I went to DSE at St Leonards in Sydney (Dick's first store) and the young bloke asked that question to which I replied, "I'm a writer." Right away he said, "Well, you don't need a 386. The 286 will do what you want, no worries." Hehe. So I paid 3 grand for an obsolete machine with a 20MB HDD.

If I'm asked that same question these days I turn it around to "What can this machine do for me?" or "What's the difference between this one and that one?"

As to the cheap Toshie with W8, I went looking when I was having trouble with my old Toshie. I did a malware check, found the culprit, deleted it, and now the old girl is pumping and grinding away just fine - bit slow but okay. She's maybe 5 or 6 years old with Vista. Soooooo, I'll pass on a new one for now. The old girl just might keep on keeping on for another year or two yet.

Meanwhile, thanks for the info regarding W8 even though it's not my thread.

Actually, Dick's first store was a small radio parts shop in the old Big Bear supermarket complex at Neutral Bay just off Military Road (beside the old tram / bus depot) just west of the Ben Boyd Road intersection. I used to go there to buy my electronic parts. Once he moved to the second newer much larger store at St. Leonards, I was very happy, as I worked at St. Leonards and it was so easy to get bits I needed straight after work on my way home.

Regards, Brian

I have a tosh laptop with win 8 , and love the classic shell add on as the interface you get with win 8 drives me mad.It still can be a pain in the proverbial, but I am getting used to it. Tried the download the 8.1 upgrade , but after 3gig download, it didn,t work, and buggered my download limit for the rest of the month.I would have stuck with win7, but win8 was on the laptop, and is all but impossible to get rid of. I have tried. As for win9, I am still getting used to win8....Bill

Bill, I have a feeling Win 9 will look like Win 7 but don't quote me on that, just a feeling in my water.

I have decided to stay away from 8.1

nothing wrong with Windows 8
all they had to do was listening to their customers and put an windows 7 start button in it
it's not hard to put it in there if you want it ,

CC, that Classic Shell is the one I posted at the beginning of this topic, great program and its FREE, I like free biggrin

My Win 8 opens at the desktop just like Win 7, and then I use the shell to do whatever I want, I do not like the tile page and I think that is what a lot of people could not get used to, looks like Win 9 will be out soon, well maybe next year, and there is talk of it being a free upgrade for Win 8 user's, not holding my breath for that one knowing how much Bill likes money. biggrin
