Storage space in a new van

Looking to upgrade our old Roadstar, and have been impressed by the "storage space"  in the new vans we're have been looking at. Must say we are looking at vans just a little larger than our current, and at first it seemed the difference in the storage space was quite a lot..... Until we got down to details.

Although there are lots of doors and drawers, almost 50% of the cupboards had hoses or wires etc inside! restricting usable space and options.

When we got down to discussions about "where would xxx go?" Etc, we will be no better off in terms of storage, even though it would be organised differently.

For example, one jayco we were looking at has no pantry, the single bed option has a single central drawer between the beds...... and I'm not sharing.

I had assumed (silly me) that going from a poptop to a full van would be better in terms a storage.

I thought so too Rosie... what about all those upper cupboards that we don't have in a pop-top?

From experience a pantry is a bit of a mixed blessing, those square fruit jars fit perfectly but nothing else does, and you have to pack it very carefully... also check its location, as ours is right next to the door and wont open unless the door is open, because the door handle is in its way.

Aha! so with an island bed we get 2 drawers as well as cuddles? smile

You must be looking at the 'wrong' vans. Ours is a full size and we have ample cupboard space. Looka at a Golden Eagle or a Paramount.

We have a jayco Starcraft and are most impressed with the amount of storage we have!
When discussing with friends what name to call the caravan 'tardis' ' was the agreed consensus!! Lol

We have just had a few mods done to our old Heritage, one of the things we did was get rid of that useless lounge under the window and put cupboards as well as a lot extra bench space. At least now SWMBO might fit her stuff in

Jayco have a bad habit of routing piping etc in cupboards in such a way as to make the rest of the space unusable. Most other manufacturers learned the value of conservation of space long ago.

Our Olympic has very few cupboards with wires or plumbing.   Apart from the necessary and fairly unobtrusive plumbing under the sink and basin we have 1 bedside cupboard which contains the hot water system, and wiring in the bottom of one of the small corner triangle cupboards at the end of the bed, and a bit of plumbing wiring at the back of the pantry cupboard which is behind the pull out pantry so in space that would be unusable anyway.   We have more internal storage than we use.

I learn from the checkout chicks that know a thing or two about packing bags. It's amazing what they can fit into a given space. So I've tried their technique with the cupboards and other nooks and crannies in the camper. A bit of forethought and planning can make a helluva difference.

The trouble Gary with fitting things in every nook and cranny is that when you need something at the back you have to pull everything out to get it
All the plumbing in our Jayco is up the front near the hot water. You wouldn't want to store stuff there as it is to hard to get to

And another problem is that if all that storage has too much in it, your overall weight will be over the limit for towing. Be careful how much you load into your storage spaces.

.. having recently purchased a new Caravan, the above statement is so true ! .. after leaving a Motorhome with a trailer on tow, space and storage was not the biggest problem for me. Even good weight distribution was not the answer .. Had to "down-size" in my personal wants and needs to satisfy the legal requirements .. yep .. if you don't use something .. sell it .. someone else will !

I know how it is, when I bought my Mirage Sun liner cab over I too thought I would have heaps more storage space than my previous hi ace....think again, wrong. It is usable storage that counts! Annie
