Poor roads don't cause fatalities, they are caused by impatient drivers who won't drive slowly when conditions dictate they should.

Full agreement from me too Peter. I believe the biggest problem we have with so-called accidents on our roads is exactly that - the apparent inability these days for drivers to drive to the conditions - whatever they may be ... condition of road surface, weather conditions, visibility (either due to weather or terrain), volume of traffic, etc etc. Too many too focussed on getting 'somewhere' rather than driving to conditions - better to be a minute late than dead on time.

For goodness sake people, my post was simply a heads up re a newspaper article decrying the state of roads on the YP, the remark re slow moving vehicles was an afterthought, I have removed it.

As a resident of Moonta I drive on the YP roads constantly, the article is spot on.

Really get a little sick of the holier than thou attitude adopted by some posters here.

Sorry Santa. Not my intention to stir ya rup. cry Consider this an apology for apparently doing so.

I think Peter and I were just trying to say that if drivers drove more to the conditions they encounter then there would be less 'problems' with these roads.

I might add that if people were actually TAUGHT to drive to the sorts of conditions they WILL encounter during their journeys then the issue of 'poorly maintained' roads would also be less of a frustration to travellers. Learning to drive around a few sealed roads in an 'urban' environment does not really help the learning process. It all relies on experience to make good (or worse hmm ) drivers.

Combine that with an attitude that just because it says 100kph LIMIT on a road, then drivers feel they must sit on that speed. If conditions make it not safe to do so then it should be remembered it is a limit and not the STIPULATED speed.

Interestingly, RACV in Victoria recently also released the results of their research showing that Victoria had the worst roads in Australia. I know RACQ and NRMA also consider their roads are the worst too. All are lobbying all levels of government for better attention to roads.

All of that notwithstanding, all levels of government responsible for roads need to provide more attention to directing funds according to the need. But I guess no-one wants to pay more rates/taxes, everyone wants more and more from all levels of government and there are considerable pressures on the finite and limited income available to all levels of government.

Again, sorry for gettin' up ya nose - just putting a view and opinion.

Thanks John, have you driven the roads I'm referring to in the OP? seriously, I've driven extensively in Vic, compared to our roads on YP they're like super highways.

Come over and give em a try, nice area, rubbish roads, perhaps it's best that way, keeps the tourist numbers down a bit. smile

I would have to agree with Santa re these roads. I have driven on most of the roads listed in the attached article.
The article and video clip make them look better than they are.

The Clare to Spalding road is just as bad and in many placed poorly designed.

We had to do some of those roads in 2012 with our newly sprung 30 year old caravan. Talk about double bounce. Hubby had to take it very sedately and it was almost a cause for motion sickness! But we still loved Yorke Peninsular.

Yep agree here Cultana,, and it's about 9' wide (2.7m approx) each way,, the old 1960's standard. This leaves about 6" (150mm) between road edge and centre line for a 2.4m wide van. Hilly and bumpy.

We slowed down on this section I can tell you.
