VAST TV Service

For anyone who has Satellite TV via VAST this information may be helpful. We got Satellite TV from Albany TV Services in September 2013. As an aside, if you are in or near Albany and are looking at satellite TV, pop in and speak to Neil, really knowledgable and helpful.

We used it frequently and in fact while staying in Munglinup that was all we had. In December we moved to Esperance and could access TV via our normal Wineguard aerial.

We left Esperance and had free camped at Starvation Bay. I had set the dish up, found the satellite, got the channels and then the system said that our subscription had expired. Only getting the service 4 months before and the subscription supposedly being for 6 months we were not happy. Videos that night.

When we got to Albany, we were heading here anyway, we popped into see Neil at Albany TV. He told us that because we hadn't used the service for a period of time, the card had "Gone to Sleep". If we had left the VAST box set up and turned on, about every 2 hours the system sends out a beep or a flash or an indication that it is there and it would have woken up. Thanks for the knowledge.

So, if you haven't used the system for a while and you are in internet range, just Mr Google VAST and you can reactivate your card. Or, set the system up and if the message comes up that your subscription has expired within the 6 month period, just wait for a couple of hours and it should (?????) reactivate automatically.

Really hope that this helps someone and prevents angst.

Bob

Thanks Bob. Just starting out with a new VAST system so information such as this is really valuable - just have to remember when the time comes, now that's a challenge :)

The problem is you probably need to remember it. If you have the internet accessible, you just go to the website and reactivate. If you don't have the internet accessible you can't even go to this site and do a search for VAST. Hopefully a seniors moment doesn't strike at the wrong time. lol

Thank you for this information, I shall file it away for when I get a dish.

you can renew your VAST travellers rego up to 4 weeks prior to the due date.

I have a reminder in my phone for 4 weeks prior and if going to an area with no or poor coverage I can renew it before going out of range.

thanks Bob, reminded me I needed to do it. Does it have to be renewed every 6 months even when being used?

I've read in another forum, and have used it, that if you get an expired text, set your sat. channel to chn.2 and it resets in 1/2hr to an hour.

That's correct but you only get ABC & SBS it's all the other programs that you need to be registered for.

It does not matter which channel the box is tuned to.

as long you are getting the signal and the box is turned on it will receive the authorisation codes in time and all the channels you are supposed to get will be available.

yes it will Frank, but Ontos45 was saying if you get an expired text, meaning you have not re-registered, that is how I read his/her post, perhaps I read it incorrectly.

Oppps I hope you were referring to Ontos45's post.

wombat I share with anybody's posts-even yours

I have found if you leave the box tuned to the channel you get the expired text on as soon as it gets authorised you will know straight away when the channel comes live

it works for me old mate

actually the text usually just says one of two things
"you are not authorised to receive this channel" or "Subscription expired" or very similar anyway.

if you know your subscription has NOT expired just leave it on and it will come good. Longest I have waited(whilst outside enjoying a beverage) was about half an hour.
if you have not renewed your subscription still leave it and get online and do the renewal it will most likely come good before you have logged off the site.

 Yes

No, we have had our since  May 2013, (from Albany TV & Repairs) no issue with renewal at 6 months.  Have used it regularly since.

EDIT: Thinking about the conversation with Neil, (from Albany TV & Repairs) perhaps the difference is whether you set up as a traveller or as a permanent address.  Ours is set up as a traveller.  The only thing we have to do is advise VAST when we travel into another state.

Thanks KFT, you put it more elegantly than I.

Ours was installed a contractor to VAST and is on a short pole so that when we move I can put on our van or tri-pod. We had satellite before when we travelled but it could not be used with VAST so as a pensioner and being in a "Dead" area got install for nix but we supplied the magic box on 12VDC and also we can record using an external HDD in a caddy. Going to change to an internal HDD when we can.

Hi Peter and Sue,

I believe the Humax box has an internal HDD for that purpose but I am not sure if it is available in 12v. It also has twin tuners so you can watch one and record one simultaneously.

magic stuff these days

Yes, Neil set us up as a traveller and that is why we were surprised when the term EXPIRED came on the TV. If we had of had internet access, we would have resubscribed via the internet. VAST office hours are 8.00 am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday AEST. This was late, after 4pm Western Australia time on a SUNDAY. The Gods were conspiring against us.

At least now we know and I have attempted to let others know, what to expect. If you haven't used the VAST for a time, before you get t'other side of Woop Woop, go to the VAST website and make sure your subscription has not gone Nigh, nighs. If you haven't, once you get the signal and it says EXPIRED, go for a walk and by the time you get back, voila. Hopefully. Maybe. Possibly.

I know that this is a very old post

But...

My opinion is that any information is good, as it may help others in the future

Had not used the sat TV for about a year
Got it working on channel 800 (the information channel)

Hit the renewal button on the internet and it said it was now renewed until 7-2-2019

But...
Waited, and waited, and waited, and waited

I found a REHIT button for those decoders which had been turned off for a long time
Hit this button, and everything was working, by the time I walked from my house to the motorhome

Below is the link
