Ah now! That would be a capital offense and you'd have been hung, but for a daughter you're just committed.

Always knew I should be in the funny farm - but now I now it definitely! Way back when 50's and 60's Mum used to get a cough mixture made up by the Chemist, you know when they used to have their 'recipe books' full of potions etc, well .... that cough mixture was eventually banned and Mum could no longer get it, 'cause it had opium in it!!! My sister and I jokingly used to refer to the fact that Mum 'drugged' us up. Tasted good too!

I used to get '_______Gripe Water' for our colicky babies. Worked well. Then discovered it had a liberal dash of alcohol in it!

Oh yes GD this was for real, and what we now classify as child abuse today was very, very real too. Can even remember the chemists' names too.

But if you look at old tales/ medical books from the 1800's their mixtures did include opiats etc. I came across it in an historical novel some time ago, and nearly fell off my seat when I read that the Apothicary gave this cough mixture with opium in it.

It seems to me this list was probably extracted from an admissions book from the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, rather than a list of things that could get you locked up in there. That is, the actual reason given in the admissions book for each particular patient. Pretty scary though.

Hope my daughter don't find out about the alcohol, she is a very fussy first time mother.................. I introduced her to gripe water and it sure works

My grandmother got the same effect by just dipping the baby's dummy in brandywink

I like the sound of "Dissolute Habits" and "Immoral Life".  Just how big was this asylum?  Somewhere around 7 692 024 square kilometres maybe?

Thought the same thing thought would include past and present inhabitants of the Canberra Asylum

I noticed these reasons defiant apply:

Politics

Political Excitement

Bad Habits & Political Excitement

So sums it up.

Shooting does not necessarily result in death. Also, it could be that someone could go mad after an accidental shooting.

If you're going to shoot someone you would have to be very committed. :)
