RE: Toshiba Laptops - never again

The wife has a Toshiba Satalite laptop that's 6yrs old & is used every day for long hours, is just starting to give trouble. She & I now have 2 new Toshiba Satellite Pros with Windows 7, only 6mths old & work well. Perhaps you got a lemon.

Why is it whenever someone asked a question or posts a grip about a pc or related question the fruit oops sorry apple people come out of the woodwork? They are computers some dear some not so much. Personally having had a fruit machine and needed a replacement part it ended up being cheaper to buy a new laptop (PC and never looked back) than getting it fixed. Too much propriety gear and rigmarole for me to handle. Ok a long time ago but the lesson stuck.

OOPs now I done itbiggrin but please people please just try and answer the question asked and not start another 'mines bigger than yours' bun fight. Live is too short to fight over such trivial things.

Pete

I run a fleet of about a hundred laptops, we are currently using Dell Latitudes on Windows 7, they are not bad machines, they are reliable and solid, and the company stands behind them. In the past I have run a fleet of Toshibas, close to a thousand of them, and again we were buying the machines that are aimed at the commercial user, they were good as well.

I now buy machines from Grays or from Dell clearance site (dell.com.au/dfo), and have occasionally been sucked into trying the cheaper models aimed at the home market. The difference in quality is enormous. Never again will I buy a machine aimed at the domestic market. Basically you get what you pay for.

From time to time we will add an Apple product to the fleet, typically for a specific graphical application where they typically shine. Given that we are almost totally windows the introduction of one apple normally costs us as much time as the rest of the fleet put together, hence why they just don't last with us.

Personally, I would only buy Dell Latitudes, because I know them.

I did contract computer training for a major Brisbane TAFE for 12 years - the IT techie and I had a code for PC breakdowns during the classes - the most common one was a 'pebkac" - problem exists between keyboard and chair

I have had the Dell Inspiron desktop for about 5-6 years (includes monitor and keyboard) and has never failed me.  I started with Vista but swapped to Windows 7.

I don't know about the laptop though, I have no experience with them from Dell.

I had two Toshiba lap tops so far and both packed it in. Power failure, no fan, and faulty drive.
For the past 4 years my two Acers with on line back up system are top notch, it has the lot,
from on line back up, to restore and FREE  upgrades. Never a problem. I can buy my New  Acers  Aspire 750gb  for $200.

on line Acer Hon Kong With 7 Pro edition, and free upgrade to Win 8, which is not worth having, neither was Vista.

When they get faulty ....in the bin. We guys tweak, AND don't like over paying for PC's.

If you realy want to tweak up to the max, XP Pro is still the best one with multi drives.

Apple McIntosh....just  over rated, nothing special. You pay for the name.

I agree about the China built stuff, it's cheap and I got no bitches with Acer.

Acer have a tops online back up system keeps drivers up to date and have not had a problem for 4 years.

Let Win auto updates take it's course and all stays sweet, XP will always be the best, Win 7 will never

run as fast, we tweak XP Pro and it's very fast on uploads. Your registry needs to be up to date

continuously though,  Chrome is regarded as malware.

Paying over $1,000. for a lap top waste of money, that buys me 3 Acer lap tops with 750 GB. 5 GB Ram.which is

stacks for any lap top. Apple McIntosh to me means too many fiddle factors.
