Hi all, I'm asking this for my brother who is not on the internet. When is the best time to go to Tasmania, they will be taking their car and staying in cabins.

We have usually travelled in May or Sept, not as busy and accommodation prices are lower and you don't have to worry about booking ahead in the main tourist areas, car rental may also be cheaper.
Summer is best time, weatherwise, but it is peak time, and can cost a bit more. But having said that - we spent the summer 2012-13 over there, and had blizzard conditions and snow on Cradle Mountain on 6th December - and several quite cool days and nights!
But the good days were really good - we even went swimming on their "heatwave" day!!!! Okay, only for three seconds - but hey we went in!!!!
We went for four months - was fantastic!!!

Howdy,
I am only going over to see my brother and sister in law. There a week at this stage but looks like I might extend to two. Few day trips from Devonport though where I will be staying.
I have been to Tassie twice before so all's good.

when going over on the ferry, what would most people recommend..................day trip or night ?
That depends, if you want to arrive a couple of hours before dark, or first thing in the morning. Prefer night trips myself, nice cabin to sleep in after a couple of relaxing drinks. During the day you see lots more and day trips are normally cheaper without a cabin, but you have only a couple of hours of light when you get here and have to arrive early in the morning to board.
Make sure you take your own pillow to the cabin and anything else you will need while away from your tug cos you can't go back down to it once under way Pauline.

All you boat people, enjoy your time here, the weather has finally started to come good.
A good spot discovered by us this year for anyone looking for a quiet base south of Hobart, try riversedgecamping.com.au
It is a farm stay with amenities, power and non-powered sites available, wood for the fire freely available also. Just out from Huonville aat Lonnavale.
We're currently on the boat heading home to melbourne. Just sailing out of devonport now. Hubby and I have had an awesome three and a half weeks in Tassie. Been camping and staying in pubs. Two or three nights camping, then two or three nights pub stay mostly. Weather only just warm the past few days. Been freezing. Got rained in (and hail) in queenstown for three days. Seen a lot, spent a lot, ate a lot and generally had a great time.
I/we prefer night trips , nice cabin to sleep in after a couple of drinks, slept like a log. up early to get of boat u have the day to travel and find your way to first stop I guess. cant wait to get back and stay for longer.just enjoy
Going over on the night sailing on 31st....going ith friends who are in two mini's....we will be in LR D4. Staying in a variety of B&B for 10 days all round the island. Can't take van as it is only being delivered when we get back.....been before twice...really great.
I was there in October the last time, and the flowers everywhere were stunning. Had some good weather and some sleet, but hey, that's part of the adventure. Never experienced sleet in Qld so it made a change!
