Two things - Loxton SA & how the Hell do I secure the mirror?

Hey all,  we are almost ready to hit the road (at flaming last!) for our full-time adventure, but have a couple of questions:

1 - what is the best way to secure a mirror in the bus (liquid nails, screws around edges, both?) - we have full-length cupboards we can attach to.  As I will be studying, I will have to put in an appearance on campus from time to time (as well as maybe turn up for grad program interviews), and want to look like I got dressed WITH a mirror.  Or at least, like I might have had a mirror.

2 - anyone stopped in Loxton SA?  We *may* have to sit for a while, depending on Uni, and this sounds like a nice spot on the Murray, as well as not being super-exxy.

Ta :)

I'd be inclined to put the mirror in a timber frame then screw the frame to the wall.  A Cabinet Maker could do that for you.

I have an idea I passed thru Loxton at one time, but can't recall the town.

You can get little corner brackets designed to hold mirrors onto a flat surface at places like Bunnings..
I would be using these in conjunction with some liquid nails or the like..

First put the bottom 2 corner brackets on then
Just put 4 small dabs of LN under each corner of the mirror and then put it in place and put the top 2 brackets on..

Should stay there and not move but would be easy to remove if ever you needed to do so..

If you are not worried about removing said item, silastic or sikaflex will do the job., You can get these from Bunnings.

Re Loxton - I stayed at the RV park where the dump point is - motorhomes only, have to be self contained as the amenities are locked 24hrs a day and 3 day limit - cost was $7 per van per night and Council do patrol it and their depot is also at the end of the area. It is fully grassed - looks like it used to be a caravan park but no power now even though poles etc still there.  Here is the sign there

You can buy double sided mirror fixing tape, bit more forgiving than LN's if you ever need to remove it.

Think Bunnings sell it, but make sure its the 3M one not the cheapy stuff. Another idea would be the 3M Command strips they do a heavy duty one and we hang heaps of things with it in our 5'er, and it comes off easily if you need to remove it later.

I have a cork notice board, quite large, above my desk and it is held with Command strips.

Rosie doesn't say the size of the mirror. If it's large it will be heavy and I'd stick with my original suggestion of a timber frame screwed to the surface. . The corner brackets suggested would be fine if it's only a small mirror.

We purchased a plastic mirror approc 400mm x 1200mm used double sided tape on the rear, and a bead of silicon around the outside edge. from memory cost around $150.

I would resist using any type of adhesive on the back of the mirror.

Any sort of movement, and you can just about bet on that in an RV, will damage the silvering, and that will be seen from the front.

Most hardware stores carry a rebated molding that you could easily adapt for the purpose of holding the mirror.

Hi Rosie,
Loxton quite a nice park down by the river, nice walks and grounds. Good shopping, IGA etc great pizza spot as well. by the way no pets in park. Plenty of nice places within 50 klms of there, Renmark, Berri and ofcourse Lake Bonnie in Barmera. Great fresh fruit and veg at Aggies, just west of Berri. If you want a free/donation park try Martins Bend just out of Berri, toilets BBQs etc. busy during holidays but beautiful the rest of the times right on the Murray River.

Loxton is sounding like a good spot for a stop.......

If you are going to stick the mirror to the wall, make sure that you get the stuff that is made for fixing mirrors or over time the silver backing will be eaten away.

Ask at Bunnings or a bathroom fittings store.

Mine are stuck down .. original Jayco .. no probs.

I would use both corner brackets, and double sided tape to hold the mirror in position while the special adhesive cures.

My suggestions.....There's the security blanket system where a piece of  cotton  the same size as the mirror back is on day one glued to the mirror back using PVA glue and once dry ( the next day) then more PVA glue applied to the linen and the mirror put in place with a few pins under the mirror helping support the weight while it dries.

On a hot day the solvents in traditional LN may attack the silver back of a mirror ( see label instructions ) however there is a LN made specically for the job,and believe its or not it's called liquid nails for mirrors.

Peronally I would use 3M perm tape squares combined wiith a few a few nuggets of LN mirror the size of a ten cent pieces.Al available from a Mitre 10 store.
