Hi, happy new year to everyone. We are a couple of Poms over on a month's visit to WA to have a look about.
Wife's an Ozzy by descent and I've just been granted my Spouse's visa so were all good to go, but before we decide when and where to buy a house I've've been trying to persuade the missis we should have a good look around first.
How better than to become GN's. Maybe even the big lap once or twice before we settle down.
However, the wife isn't totally convinced (well, that's one way to put it). We've just left Albany on our way back to Mandarah and on to Perth.
Are there any kind folks in the area that would be prepared to meet up and give her a flavour of your first hand experiences of being GN's please?

WE are still looking after 9 years to find a place to settle in a bricks a mortar house. Too much fun on the road. When the lawn needs mowing we just shift. We can catch up in the Perth area some time if you wish.

Hi Neil, as I type this at 11.35am on 7th Jan we are in Williams, on our way across country to Mandarah. We should be in Freeo / Perth within a couple of days. Would love to catch up in Perth, I suggest I pm you once we are there and sort out some arrangements. Thanks, Mike.

Hi Doug, we've only 1,300 kicks so far in the hire car, but I have to tell you, so far the driving standards we have encountered have been very good, peeps seem very respectful of speed limits, and are courteous, even in town. And the state of your roads are first rate compared to in the UK.

Hi Jules, thanks for the heads up. Unfortunately, we're on our way back to the chilly, miserable UK before then. We had to come over earlier than we had planned to validate my spouse's visa before it expired, so we have to go back to finalise our affairs.
Welcome JD's, hope you manage to get things sorted ok, it is a great place to live.
Many of us have Brit descendants and could probably be described as Poms with Ozzie accents with an acquired Oz culture.
Around the 50's many Poms came out here on 10 pound assisted passages, of those who came to WA, many settled in Rockingham area.
The younger Poms that emigrate since then seem to prefer the beach area of the northern suburbs, where most of them live according to the last census.
When I was a kid, I was told that Poms was derived from the word Pomegranate because the kids coming to Oz were so white that when they ran around etc their cheeks were all rosy and red like Pomegranates.
Another version is the word came from Prisoners Of Mother England, not sure which is right or wrong, or maybe depends where you live in Australia.

Me thinks you are fishing in the wrong spot. All the poms are north of the river in Perth. Try suburbs such as Butler and the immediate surrounds. That's assuming you want to mingle with them. lol

My FIL was a 10pound Pom, but he is an Aussie now - he says so, and at 80-odd, we don't think it's healthy for him to get worked up (he gets most upset if anyone hints he isn't an Aussie), so we figure we'll let him be Australian.

I'm looking for a meet up for an hour or two with any GN's currently in the Perth area who would be kind enough to share their experiences of living the nomadic life with us, particularly in answering the wife's questions and trying to re-assure her concerns. Especially of setting off on the big lap as you guys call it.
We should be back in Perth area from Mandurah in a couple of days and fly back to the UK on the 22nd Jan.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the idea of meeting other Brits, but I can find plenty of those when I get home haha.
I would say that's not so easy as it used to be, but that's not very politically correct is it!
PS. I accept I could post loads and loads of questions here on the forum, after all that's what a forum is for, but it would be so much better if she could chat to someone face to face.
HI Jami Dodgers we have been in oz since 1988 had to go back for elderly parents for a couple of years but couldnt wait to get back wouldnt live anywhere else we are in queensland best state in oz start our travels in april good luck with your search may meet up on the road sometime somewhere

G'day JD. We are Poms (have been living in Oz since 1999) and are currently touring Oz in a motorhome and have only been on the road since October. Home base is Hervey Bay QLD but we are currently in Bunbury WA until Thursday 9th January and making our way up to Mandurah and Perth. Happy to catch up and share some experiences (and some beers!)

It's the north that particularly worries Jane.
I guess different people have different ideas of "The BIG Lap" to us it is going where ever we like and seeing what ever we want to look at..
There are people that will tell you that crossing the Hay Plains is as boring as watching grass grow, but to me a trip across the Hay Plains is very interesting becoz I like looking around and seeing parts of the country I have never seen before..
Tooo many are in such a hurry that that cant see the wood for the trees..lol..
We are on the big lap and have been for a couple of years but so far we are still running up and down the eastern states looking at and enjoying things we like..
In 2 weeks we are off again and will head out west of NSW and then back east and then head down to Vic before making our way to SA and Barossa Valley to check that out.. and then come winter we may head up to the Atherton Tablelands for awhile and who knows where from then..
Toooo many try to live life on the road the same way as they live life in the cities.. on the run....
Jami Dodgers, I remember selling our 5 acre hobby-farm near Wagga to a young newly arrived English family. At the time they seemed so pale and pink compared to our brown sunburnt complexions, and I was worried they wouldn't cope very well with living away from town and shops, and the less "civilised" lifestyle on a little farm. We were called upon for help/advise a few times, but once they settled in and learned how to operate the water-pump and a few other things, they had a ball.
They lived there till their children grew up, and were well known in the district for saying how lucky they were to have such a wonderful lifestyle after the riots in Brixton.
Its not impossible for "new Chums" to enjoy the outback. That's if they want to.
