January 07 Today in History

Gday...

1799  -

Bass and Flinders complete their first circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land.

1912  -

Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson reaches and names Commonwealth Bay on the Antarctic continent.

1965  -

The first hydrofoil ferry, the MV Manly, begins operating in Sydney Harbour.

1983  -

Hans Tholstrup completes the first solar-powered crossing of Australia.

Cheers - John

1965? Jeez, I always thought the hydrofoils were "modern". I was only 21 then hehe. Just a kid. I remember the Manly ferries with a small band - saxophone, accordion, fiddle, etc - and lolly boys selling Minties. Riding the ferry on a Sunday was a major event back then.

Almost forgot the fun pier at Manly. And the dodgem cars. Kid's heaven.

Interesting about Douglas Mawson at Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica. That's where that ship is currently trapped in ice 102 years later.

I was 20 then and saw my first live sharks at the Manly Aquarium, was intrigued with them and went to Paddy Pallem (?) to get my dive licence. Sure was kids heaven and nice pub too, pity too young then to buy a beer legally. Made up for it later.

Wasn't a coincidence, the ship was chartered to follow in Mawson's "footsteps" (so to speak).
