Whaddaya reckon about these old antiques at the front of PJ on the sides of the cab over? For one thing, they're not an identical pair. I'm thinking it's better to replace them with something more modern (and matching), and trash the oldies. But what I don't know is what lies behind the fittings. Is it like the walls of a newly built house where wires poke out of small holes in the plaster board waiting for a cover to hide the mess? In other words, is the hole behind PJ's old fittings the same size as the fitting or just a small hole to expose the wires? I know I could answer that question myself by unscrewing the fittings but they're old and would probably break. If the size of the hole behind the old fittings is not relevant to the size of the fittings themselves, then I could replace the old ones with modern LED ones of approximately the same size, yes?
In my limited experience I would imagine that there would be sufficient wire to be able to pull a little bit out to connect new leds.
When I did charity car rallies a few years back some of the support vehicles towed pop top vans and had similar delemas.
Yes , We replaced several lights damaged along the way. we did not have a situation were we had the wires pull back in. In saying that it does not mean that it won't happen..Good luck Garry. Hope this helps..Alan..
The wire will be coming out of a small hole and my guess it there will be some slack wire there you can pull out to attach to the new lights..
In NSW if a light is fitted to a vehicle it must work...
If you think you dont need them then you could remove them and cut the wires in such a manner that the outer cover is longer than the wire core and then just push the wires back in and fill the hole with whatever..
There will also be 2 screw hole that attach each light..
At one stage before Sol had his way, they probably where a matching pair. They would have an old bayonet style globe in them which were suss at the best. There would/should be enough wire behind to change them for LED style but you would have a mark where the old ones once where. LED last for a long time but ask yourself if they are needed for safety or vanity. "Look at all my lights". The LED which most transport uses now aren't cheap so could be over $50.00 to put 2 on. Worth it??? Your choice.

You can get a pair of those LED lights on ebay delivered for $20-30, even cheaper if you get into bidding.
They are more likely to be of the festoon type fitting than a based lamp, and it is entirely possible that they are using the aluminium siding as the return path, ie only one wire to the light.
Thanks, C1... me too. As some comments have pointed out, if they're fitted, they need to work. Rego is due for the truck in April so I guess I better fit a couple of newies, even though the slide-on is not technically part of the truck and doesn't require separate rego.
When I re-registered my Millard caravan in Qld. 5 yrs. back had same clearance lights and re-fitted the super cheap ones. Festoon bulbs and 2 wires through about 1/4" hole. Had to also fit white/front, orange/side and red/rear fixed reflectors to get passed by inspector. He wouldn't accept just the self adhesive glue either, had th be drilled and screwed on as well so did not vibrate off when travelling.
