RE: Fair go pet owners

This thread started out about people taking their pets to happy hours......and as much as I love my 2 Whippets I would not drea of joining an already established happy hour with my dogs or at least certainly not without asking people first.....at times it has been evident that my boys would not be welcome (for a variety of reasons) in which case I may stay for a chat and perhaps share some munchies etc and then return to myown mh, at other times I am enthusiatically asked to bring the boys along....so in every instance 'play it by ear' see what the go is.
What I am not so keen on is people who allow their dogs to runaround all over a camp off leash, often emptying out right by your door....or putting the fear of dog into your own dog.....
I treat camps as 'on lead' parks, clear up and boys on leash until I get right out of camp, if there is a safe place to then allow the boys to take a free run whilst I am watching carefully.

 Spot on Pawsoz !

We travel full time with two spaniels, a Cav and a Springer, both are excellent travellers and we try to always do the right thing. They do not attend happy hours with us unless we are alone. And I respect others who may not like dogs.

We currently have  campers near us in a dog friendly park, who are obviously new to the game, they have a brand new rig albeit just a camper.

They have two bull terriers, whom appear to be friendly and are mainly restrained but the guy constantly lets them off their leads to run around and play! during this time I have witnessed both defecating on an empty site between them and us and because the owners are so busy on their Ipads or whatever the dogs deeds go unnoticed.

I have also been bailed up once near our door as I put my dogs leads on for one of their walks ! I did shout to them and they again restrained them only to see them back off the leads an hour later !

I am now in a quandary over whether to go over and give them a lesson in good dog manners  or just keep quiet and let them get on with it.

Trouble is my dogs will probably get the eventual blame for all the crap these offenders are leaving.

I probably would like your dogs (have seen very few in the past sixty years, including the hundreds that I've hunted with in that time that I didn't like) but I can almost guarantee that a hard arsed attitude such as yours would engender an almost immediate dislike of you Ripand Rosie.

Have to say Oldboar, Rip and Rosie have a pretty reasonable attitude toward traveling with their dogs, however hunting with dogs is a barbaric practice and  should be outlawed, it has no place in today's society and reflects poorly on those who engage in the activity.no

Banjo, I reckon they have to be told! If not by yourself nicely, then by the caravan park manager maybe not so nicely. They give all doggy owners a bad rep and cause parks to become dog-unfriendly.
Good luck.

After I posted here I went outside to find the offenders packing up, so decided to leave it there and not tempt any aggro, they will no doubt soon learn after the complaints start if they carry on the same way in other parks.

I went over the site next to us and removed to the bin the left offerings as I know the finger would have been pointed at my dogs. I did tell the park manager and he thanked me for doing so.

Infuriating as it is they were a nice couple, and they obviously cared for their dogs, you would think they would have a little more common sense, but sadly no, then we all suffer.

It is these unthinking thoughtless people that get all dog owners a bad name.

Welcome to your opinion Santa, but to be honest your opinion means nothing where control of feral pigs is necessary. Impossible to shoot what you can't see and properly done, dogging pigs is far more humane than 1080 poison or trapping. Unless you're one of the clowns that don't care about the conservation of our native species & environment you would agree if you knew the facts.

I have enjoyed this forum, and will continue to observe it.

While I sit by myself In the corner, with my 2 large dogs and a cigarette.

I generally don't smoke out of my camp, unless folk say it's ok.

And if my dogs aren't welcome, I don't go.

This forum has taught me a few things.

Travel alone and don't mix with people. Therefore I can't piss anyone off, can I?

Happy New Year to the grey nomad whingers!!!!

PS Oh, and it just so happened I spent Christmas Day at Banff, Canada. so many dogs in the hotel, from German shepherds, to bull mastiffs to handbag dogs. They were allowed everywhere, bars, shops etc within the hotel.

No one complained.

feel free to ignore me on the road, and I will happily do the same

 Hey Sally,

If I see you sitting alone with you dog and smokes, can I bring my dogs and smokes over and stay for a chat?

Hehe! No way! Just kidding my puppy dogs r super friendly, so am I until provoked. Interestingly, 4 months on the road last year, away from the GN traffic, I found that I'd keep to myself and it was always other folk that came to me and invited me over!!! Dogs, smokes and all!

But I'm seriously dreading the GN highway....... Perhaps I'll move against the traffic

Then why did you post it oldboar?. My wife and I also travel with a small Pomeranian, we would not consider taking our pet to a happy hour or meal gathering.

Simple, Intouch, although we & many others like yourselves don't take our dogs to other camps unless the invitation includes them (wouldn't take ours anyway, too big) there are many on the road that feel it is their god given right to take their pet along without regard to the feelings of other attendees or indeed for hygiene (nursing/patting little fluffy then grabbing a handful of munchies before handing them on). The post, even though many misunderstood it, was simply meant as a gentle reminder to pet owners that the feelings of other travellers should be considered.

Our dog stays at our van, we pick up after her and if we went to a happy hour she stays at our van as I wouldn't want other dogs in our annex area as our dog wouldn't like it, it should be a rule that unless your camped by yrself yr dog should be on a lead. Everyone can feel safe and if they go to the toilet you would certainly know it!

It IS a rule that dogs are always on a lead....and thats the problem.

Like yourself, lots of people are not aware of it, and it is not only for if / when you are camped by yourself. It's to protect the dog as much as other people, wildlife and facilities. Many areas have snakes and baits around.

Most dog friendly places accept dogs on lead only, unless it is posted otherwise..... Not the opposite.

What a goddamn dill.  Many of us don't have a home apart from our van, motorhome, etc.  Are we to miss out on the joy of sharing our travels with well behaved pets to satisfy the bigotry of a fool such as yourself when you occasionally decide to venture out to experience the outside world.

I am with most of you in that I dont take my [our]jack russell to any group unless I know she is welcome by everyone
and just a thought this is a saying I read several years ago
the hardest thing to do in this world is to be the person your dog thinks you are
cheers to all might see you on the road some where in the near future

Our dog comes to check the mail at the office - he sits outside on his lead with one, while the other gets the mail.  our lorikeet 'helps' hang and retrieve the washing.  Otherwise, they are both contained.  We've had a dog from the park try to get into our MH, I had a minor meltdown, it was growling and snarling.

We would never take our animals to a group event, unless it was specified they were permitted, and even then, we'd be cautious.

Before we got our dog, we weren't fans of dogs so much.  Not that we don't like dogs, we do, but having others forced in our faces was not good.  It still isn't.
