Folks, not sure if this is in the right section of the forum but does anyone know of any 'free camps' around Esperance? We know about the Le Grand NP camps ($20 pvpn + Park Fees) but we've had to come 100kms out of Esperance to Munglinup Rest Area to overnight. Any 'hidden corners' we can park up of an evening? I know in WA, you're not meant to use rest (parking) areas only in case of emergencies, but do other folk, have other folk used them? We don't want to do the wrong thing but we don't want to spend $38 per night in a CP in Esperance either?
Bushlands Caravan Park. This is probably the cheapest caravan park in Esperance (dogs allowed on lead) but is fairly basic, drinking water only available from water tanks near the camp kitchen. You would have to give them a ring to find out what their rates are. It is the closest park to Pink Lakes but is not the Pink Lakes caravan park which is a bit more upmarket and further away from the Lakes.
The park is very clean and friendly owners the water for the showers and washing machines is bore water but because of the fine sand in Esperance some gets sucked up into the filters so if you can bear with that you will be ok. I think they truck the tank water in via a contractor. I stayed there a week in a cabin and a couple of days in a non powered site, can't recall what I paid now.
The caravan park does not have a website, but the telephone number is; Bushlands Caravan Park, Collier Rd, Esperance WA 6450 (08) 9071 1346 . Sorry I can't help you with the free camps, Yeoeleven stayed at Bushlands and got a good deal for a weeks stay. The caravan park was shown in the Camps books but I don't know if it still is.

On your way into Esperance on the South Coast Hwy from Munglinup you will see their caravan park sign on the right hand side just before the Esperance town turn off.....(as your passing Pink Lakes...)
Wirroff, if it is not too late, about 10 or 15k north of Esperance is a little place called Gibson Soak. You can camp out the back of the pub for free. Not mentioned in any of the camps books. Oh, and don't tell Esperance Shire!

If you are staying at the Gibson Soak, go in for a meal. Be warned, they are huge. SWMBO and I order the Rump Surf and Turf, $39.50 and then a second plate, $5.00. The steak and accompanying chips, etc, are enough for 2 and the steak is brilliant.
