LED Light interference with TV reception

Just a little query and the answer will probably be simple however can anyone tell me why when I fit LED lights to our rangehood and turn them on we lose ABC television. As soon as they are turned off ABC is back. The other situation is related probably but when I turn my laptop on we lose all the channel 7 stations. The TV is 3 meters from the rangehood and the laptop is about 2 meters. I would love to convert the whole van to LED but the better half is concerned that we will lose more channels

Thank You   confuse

Nearly all LED lamps these days have an internal LED driver which can generate noise if not shielded.

Problem in a Van or MH is everything is close to each other and anything making electrical noise can and usually will
splatter the modern digital TV reception. 3 Metres is close enough.

A couple of things to check would be physical shielding and possibly noise on the DC supply line.

Easy to say eh? You can get power supply filters, they are easy to fit..... but you need to actually measure any
interference first to see what you are dealing with if anything.

Cheers and good luck.

First thing to check is the tv aerial integrity. For those items, especially the laptop, to be making a large impact on your tv, you probably have poor reception either due to corroded connections, poor antenna, faulty amplifier etc. Once you have sorted that out then you can worry about the LED interference, which, while still likely to be present, should be considerably less evident. Interference from LEDS can be either transmitted through the wiring or radiated through the air. Fixing the aerial should eliminate much of the radiated stuff, and filters will reduce the line troubles. You can purchase clip on filters from Jaycar etc. Get largish ones and put one or two on the incoming wiring to the LED light and the tv. The number of times the wire passes through the filter increases the filtering ability accordingly, so loop it through as many times as possible.

Question..

are the Led light's the 240v type or a Low voltage type..

the Electronics from the LED's might be the issue.. Have you tried a Different type of LED's..

Had similar problem, it was fixed by installing a new TV Lead,
Shielded coaxial cable with filters each end, bought at Dick Smiths (Yeppoon) not cheap, about $19.00.

Thank You everyone you have given me several lines to pursue.
The TV and LED's are 12v.
Can anyone tell me what the actual name to ask for in filters please.

I would still suggest getting the antenna system fully serviceable first.

Jaycar have a hotline filter, which is normally used to filter out alternator whine from a car sound system, could be a good bet for reducing interference in the TV, it would be installed in the supply wiring to the TV. Try part number AA0482.

You can also get clip on suppression sleeves. Put at least 2 on each lead. Check the diameter of the leads first and order a suitable one as they are a snug fit.

Part numbers are LF1290 for 10mm cable, LF1292 for 8mm cable and LF1294 for 7mm cable

The LED lights that cause interference are illegal to use in Australia for that very reason.

The cause is that both Narva and Dometic are using LED fittings with Switch Mode Power Supplies ie they can be used  with a supply voltage from 9vdc to 33vdc.

It is these power supplies that cause the noise and cut out your TV signal.

They need to be replaced by the supplier with LED lights that comply. (LED lights with Linear power supplies)

My awning light is a Narva light 87780 and Narva have replaced it with a 12vdc Light 87788 that does not cause the problem.

My sink light is also Narva 87654S and is being replaced with a standard dichroic bulb downlight fitting 87650S.

My bedside reading lights are Dometic Model L22TM and cause the problem also but I am yet to arrange a replacement.

If your van is under warranty, contact your dealer! If you bought the LED's somewhere else, take them back and get your money back or get them exchanged for ones that comply.

Further info can be seen at

http://www.acma.gov.au/Citizen/Consumer-info/My-connected-home/Reception-and-interference/led-lights-and-tv-interference

Jayco are denying that these lights are the cause but EVERYONE in the industry is aware of the problem!!

You cannot eliminate the problem with filters. You must replace the light fittings!

If you are parked next to a van in a park and your TV signal is being interfered with, more than likely, so is you neighbour!

I have attached a video of the problem!

It is all to do with switch mode power supplies, nothing to do with antennas or wiring.
