If you want to be constantly intouch the only way it to have a satellite phone....

Having said that I am happy to have no phone or internet when I'm on the road smile

I'm even relaxed about not having any TV as well, we are out there enjoying ourselves doing our own thing and if the family cant survive with calling every 5 mins then we haven't done a very good job of bring them up to look after themselves..

We have a $40pm prepaid plan with Boost that gives us unlimited calls to landlines and mobiles and free SMS and MMS and also 3 gig of data and as Boost is a subsidiary of Smelstra we get to use their  network so we get reasonable coverage most of the time..

Once you get away from the east coast you are going to find gaps in coverage.   Telstras coverage can be seen on the map at http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/coverage-networks/our-coverage/

We just accept it, not having internet coverage sometimes really doesn't worry us.    Not having phone coverage could be more of an issue, but so far we have just accepted it.   We have considered buying a satellite phone, and if we start travelling for a lot more of the year we may do it.

I have been down the centre Darwin to Adelaide several times and there are lots of places you can get coverage, maybe it was something to do with being on the Ghan? I actually enjoy a day or 3 without coverage! Annie
