WA get together - Yornaning Dam

Vic's found the location for our own version of Green Lake.

February 2014 seems to be the preferred time. I think we follow the Greens informal format.

I'll be the first to put my name down.

According to Vic its in Camps 7, number 164. I'll try and get more info to post up later

Bryan: Feb 1 to Feb 4 (and from Feb 15 to Feb 18)

Depending on dates and work roster when it's posted, I might be able to get a couple of days in March.

Jules, if we don't see you, we might be able to cross paths on our way north. WE plan to do the Gibb River Road May/June.

May be ok for February, not sure yet.

Here is the shire bit on the dam, it doesn't mention camping but it is allowed with no time limit I know of.

I wouldn't worry about trying to fish for trout, I believe the lock neck turtle make short work of their eggs etc....hmmmm.....turtle soup maybe? Just joking I think they are protected.

If someone can make these links clickable please;

http://www.cuballing.wa.gov.au/attractions/yornaning_dam.html

and;

http://www.campingaustralia.org/showthread.php?t=555

There are a number of photo's taken at the spot on the second link, two parts, one is further down. Gives some idea of the location.

For those who can't make February, I would suggest anyone going there let everyone know when they are going to be there and those that are in the area or can make it turn up to camp or say hello.

Thanks for the post Bryan.

The Yornaning Dam is also in the Dryandra Woodlands area Congellin DEC Campsite and the Barna Mia Animal Sanctuary (Bilbies etc), also the Lions Dryandra Woodlands Village. Booking for Barna Mia and the Dryandra Village are made through the Narrogin Tourist Info Centre which is well worth a visit. A road goes into these area's from Yornaning and Cuballing as well as Narrogin and Williams areas.

Just as well he didn't climb that rock mentioned in another thread Vic, a bit of low flowing damage could be done for sure.

It looks like some of those who are working will be there from 1st Feb to 5th Feb and one again a bit later.  (Bryan and Cathy (Jayco Gypsy) and Villatranquilla)

I would make it an open meet up for February, possibly in the early part of the month if possible, but length of stay up to the individuals.

You need to be self sufficient with drinking water and body washing methods or facilities, can swim in the lake.  Plenty of water in the lake for washing clothes, light tannin colour but ok and will not stain clothing according to one of the campers there.  Should be ok for the shower tanks.   Apparently when it was a water supply for the steam trains it was known that the tannin helped preserve the boilers from rusting.  Also make sure you have a good food supply unless you are prepared to run into Popanyining (PO there too) general store or Cuballing, or Narrogin further down the track.   Good modern hospital at Narrogin and excellent Tourist Centre for area including Yornaning/Dryandra Forrest.

I don't think there is internet or phone coverage there from memory, but a short run away from Cuballing or Popanying, Yornaning is about half way between both towns.

There are huge flat areas at Yornaning which will take the largest rigs, good turn arounds/drive through areas too. Bitumen off the Highway to the picnic area (camp area also) turn off and about 100 metres of good dirt road into the picnic/camping area.  Good modern composting toilets, also a beach and swings for the kids if any.  Dogs ok but must be on leads.  No fires during fire season.

If we make this try to be there in February, but make it a drop in centre like Greens at other times of the year we could make this a free camping hub like Greens for WA.  Always letting others know if you are going to stay there at any other time and when would help in meet ups etc.   Google Yornaning and Dryandra Forrest for more info.

Hope this helps, look forward to meeting you all there and your presence will help get this off the ground as a future southern meeting point for GN's in WA.   All welcome wherever your are from.
