I am posting this from Canada, where I am having a holiday away from Australia.

Guess what Judith? The top of the range 5 star, you beaut hotels, that put Australian ones to shame, allow dogs.

Yes. Dirty, rotten, stinky, hairy dogs. In the 5 star $500 a night rooms. And they offer doggy day care. And dogs are allowed in National Parks ( on leash) . I actually enjoy meeting the dogs in reception, they're cute and it's a great way to start conversations.

cheaper hotels offer dog services too.  It's a way of life over here, hotels accepting that people love their dogs and cats.

There is a huge world outside of Australia, and as someone that has seen over 25 countries, and been around Aus once so far, I see that some Aussies can have an isolated " I'm always right" opinion. No live and let live. Because those folk don't know that there is a whole massive world out there.

I was embarrassed on the flight over, to be told my a Canadian lady, who had just spent 4 weeks in Oz, that she thought the Aussies were rude and arrogant,  with few manners. I suggested that she had just been unlucky, but she wasn't convinced.

I reckon it's folk with "one eyed" attitudes that cause the problem. To be broad minded in life is a positive.

I enjoy Judith's posts.
She has a view, which others in the community share, she's funny in a bizarre sort of way.

Its a shame she has only one topic, and only posts about dogs.... obviously not here to make friends.

Don't take her too seriously, she's not the only "whinger" here.

Judith, this is a big country with many nomad travellers ,young and old they are entitled to take who and what they like on their travels, that includes their pets, as far as the fleas go, what a laugh a Park full of fleas because of dogs, flees are every where, they are known for breeding in dirt, known as sand flees. Theres such a treatment available for prevention of fleas that I AM SURE RESPONSIBLE PET OWNERS USE BEFORE STARTING OUT ON THEIR JOURNEY to protect against this, who in their right mind would want fleas in their van, you really seem to be a negative person, need to et a different out look on life or get a life. This country is for all to see not just the Grey Nomads who seems to think the world owes them, theres a younger lot starting to emerge, who take their pets, have parked beside them with kids and all much more fun and laughter give it a try you just may write some thing pleasant we can read. Hope you manage to have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.

Just wish a lot of modern day vanners had half the manners and control most of the dogs we meet on the road have. Traveling dogs are always cool dudes to meet, they love meeting ours and always end up playing together and never fight.

Nothing like puling up somewhere and a little person cruises up to say hello, then gets the shock of it's life when our two pop their heads up, then it's normally play time. They've got friends in towns and rigs, getting exited when they realise we are heading to a place where one of their friends are, or recognise a rig with one of their friends on board. They normally know long before we do and let you know.

Dogs don't startup generators, have diesel heaters going all day and night. Dogs don't turn facilities into a smelly urine soaked mess. Dog's don't drop litter everywhere or cut down every thing they can see to burn. Nor do dogs dump their smelly grease laden waste water on the ground, or make lots of noise well into the night round their have to have smelly smoky camps fires, whilst they talk about their last operation or the number of drugs they have to take to stay alive and sane every day.

The majority of problem dogs we've come across over the years have been dogs that only travel part time, along with their owners. The rest of their time is spent in a urban environment, which is extremely stressful for all of them.

Only time we've traveled without our dogs, is when we've gone overseas and even tried to take them, but the logistics and requirements on each country made that seem impossible. Yet on our second ship, the captain had his wife and dog on board. After that it was common to see dogs and cats on board ships and the wives of crew.

You can always talk to your dog and get a good response, the same can't be said about humans. I prefer a dogs life, they get away with just about anything they feel like doing, as long as its not hurting anyone or destroying something.

Ugly dogs get fawned over, ugly humans don't. Weird looking dogs are loved, not so with weird looking humans.

Dogs can have sex in the street and only get a good wash. Dogs piss anywhere they feel like it, if they don't like you, they piss on your leg, humans doing that, need not be gone into.

If you yell at a dog and tell it it's stupid, it will still love you unquestionably, try that with a human.

If you go out get drunk and come home late to your dog, or don't come hoe for a couple of days. It will welcome you with lots of joy and love, try that and see what happens with the ones you love.

You can sit all day with a dog in quiet peaceful harmony after forgetting the day you got it.

A dog doesn't want to stop at every shop in every town, even those that are shut and no pub.

Yep, it's a dogs life, lucky buggers.

Looks like a real cool bloke, ours are border collie ridge back crosses, brother and sister. Lick you to death, but never try to get into the bus or car unless we are there. Love interacting with them and learning how to communicate with them.

There are several dogs where we are camped at the moment - and all of them very well behaved - one little one is a semi permanent resident here, and you can set your clock to when his owner calls him - around 7am - you hear the cry "MAX, MAX - get here, I'll feed you cat food!! " This goes on several times a day, into the evening!! This little dog welcomes all newcomers, comes up, sniffs round your camp, raises his leg on your tyre or guy rope, then trots off home.

The owner sometimes puts a little headlight around Max's neck, but the other night Max was out and about doing his rounds, without his light, and would not come when called, the owner walked way down the camp where the dog had last been spotted, calling out to him, and trying to bribe him "Come on, we have fish fingers!"

One of the ladies her got out her torch to help look, shone it on the man's annex - and yes, there was Max, sitting there ever so innocent!!!

Got to say - we all cracked up first time we saw Max with his headlight - little light just bouncing along through the grass and up the road!!!!!

Well behaved dogs are usually welcome most places.  Except the dinner table, of course!

Gee I hope I don't ever cross paths with Judith or any others like her anywhere on my travels or unlike my dog, I might be rude and tell them what I think. Perhaps that's what she's lacking - a dog in her life to teach her acceptance, respect and humility. My dog is vaccinated for everything, flea controlled as I don't want to live with the little buggers either, washed regularly, obedience trained which is more than can be said for a lot of kids, and a joy to be around. Same as with people there will always be annoying, unruly, pesky, smelly, dirty animals around but perhaps Judith and others could take off the blinkers and have a bit of tolerance for the lovely, friendly well trained dogs travelling the country with their human friends.

I have been reading everybody's posts with interest... We have been travelling with our dog for years, and only ever had 1 problem with a person who didn't like the fact that I was sitting outside our van with my dog next to me on a leash...She went down to the office and put in a complaint ...The caravan park owner came up to us laughing.... He told her if she didn't like people having their dogs next to them restrained, she could leave, Not a word came out of her mouth about our dog again. She just went on to complain about peoples. Children....The funny thing was her poor suffering husband told us not to take any notice of her she just has an attitude problem !!!!!!.We love our dog and like some of the other posts do the "right thing" by him

Hi Helterskelter and all. I too have met people like the one you mention, maybe the same one, and although my first reaction is to practice a little bit of political incorrectness I find the best way is, after they have finished glaring at you or rabbitting on, just point to the ground behind them and say " excuse me but I think you have dropped something of yours". After they have studied the ground for a while you say " it looks like a sense of humour". Although I don't believe in ridiculing or humiliating other people there are occasions when it is excusable. I have a problem with people who don't like dogs but I don't have a problem with dogs who don't like people who don't like dogs. Yip yip yip.

Sorry but that's not accurate unfortunately you just didn't know where to go or what to look for.  BLM , state and national forests are open for 'free camping' in the Pacific NW (OR, WA, ID, MT) and UT.   I don't know about the other states. The two pictures are from southern UT on BLM land, no fees.  Hunted  and camped for years in eastern Oregon and Washington, BLM/state lands, no fees as recently as 2013.

Please could you clarify the places you are talking about? What is BLM, UT,ID, UT?

Sorry for the abbreviations, here you go;

U.S. DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR,  BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT  == BLM , UT == Utah, ID == Idaho, WA == Washington, MT == Montana, OR == Oregon
