Lake Ratzcastle

I am at the "Lake", at present. What a beautiful sunrise this morning. The water so still, and the birds having a wonderful time. The skies are clear, the sun rising and the quietness is just wonderful. Ole Grizzly read that I was coming here so arrived also. Nice to put a face to another name after all this time and we are the only ones here at present.

While it is a nice place and setting, I don't know if it is actually my cup of tea so to speak.(Still that other lake, green in colour has my heart). It is a very much Aussie bush setting with gum trees, sand, sand flies that bite, however I can understand why people do love the place as it is off the beaten track and really if you did not know about it, one could not easily find it.

Will move on today, have had the camps book out and there are so many camps within this area by the different rivers and in the little towns I will go off exploring more of my own backyard so to speak for the next few days. Have to love this lifestyle more and more as there is nowhere to actually be or nowhere to actually go. How good is that?

Nice spot..

I'm sort of surprised that they have not done something about the weed on the Lake..
At least that is what it looks like to me from the photo's..

To much weed can cause the water to Loss excess oxygen.. there fore cause fish kill's..

Other than that is does look like a nice spot to camp..

I'm definitely going to have to make sure that I take a few fishing rod's with me. and the tackle I will need..

Juergen, it is duck weed that is growing everywhere. Seen people with yabby nets, not sure about the fishing side of things. If you like the real bush setting it is a perfect place to camp. Out of the way and not many people are around.

Gday...

Lake Ratzcastle has been one of the nicest places I have camped. However, there has not been much rain in the NW of Victoria over the past couple of years.

The attached 'comparison' shows how the Lake was not at its best for your visit. Oh well, that is what this country is like - a constantly changing environment.

Cheers - John

Have to agree with you John. More water would make a huge difference. Not my favourite type of environment that is all. I would not say no to going back there again, but would not go out of my way to do it. Different courses for different horses. Probably was not the best weather either, first day stinking hot, 34-35, and second day, raining and 15degrees.
There were a couple there from Avoca that had been camping there for over a week, so they obviously enjoyed the place.

WOW, 2012 was great, Nice shady trees to sit under, Plenty of water, I could park there with no problems, even in 40 C +

Only problem, Thats a white gum and they do drop big branches, Silently,  untill it hits the ground,

We camped there on our way to Melbourne from SA last year, in fact, it was Father's Day weekend, 2012.  Beautifully quiet, except for a couple of fisher people.
