G'day fellow GN's. We are about to start our next leg of the Big Lap from Tamworth across the West to Broken Hill and was wondering if any of you had any top tips for free camps along the way? We are driving a Sprinter Jabiru and are self contained but SWMBO (She who must be obeyed) still likes to have a toilet nearby at the least.
Any advice would be welcomed and as we'll be travelling that way for at least a couple of weeks, maybe we might meet up with some of you? Only too happy to share a beer.....

We are also planning similar trip but turning towards Mildura, Murray River and surrounds, across towards the coast and then north. Leaving probably around April due to stuff which will tie us to home for a couple of months from Feb 2014. Very interested in free camps along the way, particularly with kayaking and fishing possibilities. We will follow responses to your post Paul and Val, with interest. your trip would duplicate our plans at least to Broken Hill. Best of luck ....

If you pop into the sub forum entitled 'Free and Budget Campsites suggested by our Contributors' you are sure to find some good spots.
I always use that section when I'm travelling and of course Camps Australia Wide. I wouldn't be without it.
Both are invaluable for ideas of where to stop while on the road.
Cheers guys and 'Libby and Charlie', we have now changed plans somewhat to go via Dubbo, West Wyalong along to Mildura and then up to Broken Hill so this, I think, emulates the way you are going?

Hi there, yes, your plans appear to mirror ours from Dubbo to Mildura ..... looks like you will be the trailblazer, so looking forward to your recommendations and thoughts as you head off from Dubbo. We actually lived in a little village east of Dubbo, so very familiar with the area, but that was 20 years ago - back then, free camping was something that never entered our mind And was not even heard of. We were more concerned with surviving our kids teenage years ( which we did with only minor battle scars). BTW, where is the free camp along the river near Dubbo? I believe there are many places to camp along the Macquarie river ... Not sure which of them are "legal" these days!
Feel free to PM us if you wish.
Happy travels and drive safe.
Cheers
Libby and Charlie

Hi guys, the free camp near the river at Dubbo is called 'Terramungamine Reserve' and is approx 8km North of Dubbo (CAW - NSW 933). A top spot if ever there was one - proper toliets (i.e. not a long drop), BBQ pits and fine vista's. 10 of us here last night and a good chin wag over a few imbibing beverages!
Off through to Parkes today. We only aim to cover a maximum of 120km a day as this is enough for my tired old body to cope with!
Forgot to add; if you need any repairs or anything done to your rig, call into B&C Caravans at Fitzroy Street in Dubbo. We had an issue with our awning and although not completely fixed (it's designed wrong on an angle), they were most helpful and polite.
I stayed at Terramungamine on my way down too. Great place with friendly people. There were plenty there on the 2 days I stayed there.
Loved watching the cows coming down to drink on the opposite bank.
