Ibis Air Con

NeilandRaine

We have an Ibis installed in our van and it has been very good.   We did have a problem where the thermostat probe was not correctly positioned when it was installed.   It was fix and have not had any more problems.

The Ibis is designed and built in Australia, so parts are available.   We found it quieter an the Dometic as well.

Happy Caravanning

We are about to upgrade our old a/c. Have been told Ibis is the best however my Caravan man says they have had problems with outside cowling(spell check) cracking and causing leaks.
Aircommand will not accept responsibility under warranty and say it is an insurance problem.

So what is the best a/c and has anyone heard the above

Hi ! I think ALL caravan A/C are crap ?? I have the Dometic, but from what i have seen , heard, and Felt, ?? The Ibis is ''better crap'' than the Dometic ?? IMHO

I have been in a few vans where the have put in the Small split system House A/cons, they do the job fantastically for both Cooling and Heating, It will be the way I go if I need to replace my A/c, Last time I did some checking, The split system unit [ brand name] cost around $600 to $700 And Professional Installation around the $1000 to $1100 mark, which worked out Much cheaper for more efficient Technology, That does the Job, -- Do a search and you should find a lot of Info on Past posts on this subject ?? ---- Just food for thought ?? good luck with whatever you decide smile

Hello Neil & Raine
I have an ibis on my van and did have a problem with the wiring burning out on the external unit, but they replaced the unit which was out of warranty and I had to pay installation costs
Have not heard about the cowling, but ours is quieter than the dometic and seems to do the job. Have not had to use it much yet

I have an ibis in my MH and while it is only 4 months old, have never had a problem with it and for the last 2 weeks it has been going flat out as I am currently in qld and the weather has been a bit hot :)

Not sure who your caravan man is but does he make more money by selling other brands???

Cheers

Brett

We have had both an Ibis and a Coleman and have found the Ibis to be superior and have had no problems with either.

Hi Guys our new van has an ibis air command on the day we picked it up they had it running and it felt better than the dometic that we had in the previous van. So really who knows what's best fingers crossed it will work well without hassles.

Sorry but agree totally, We've had a Coleman, a Dometic, and an Ibis (the worst ever for noise) so have given most of  them all a try.

The best and quietest most economical is our latest, a Fujitsu domestic split, had it fitted from new in our 5th wheeler, best thing we have done.

Ours cost $1000 all up fitted by our manufacturer.

It has never missed a beat in 19 months full time use, heating and cooling and travel, would never have another piece of dinosaur rubbish on the roof ever.

The Fuji will run easily from a 1 kw genny if needed and is whisper quiet. I could not sleep with the Ibis due to its constant droning and roar.

Had it checked out, new rubber mounts and still useless.

During our travels we have met meany people with failed rooftop units yet not one with a domestic split failure, but if ours did fail, I could replace twice for the original cost of the Aircommand old technology cr*p.

No contest really.

if at all possible I'd go for a domestic split system. We have an Ibis (2008) and its very noisy inside (quiet outside) and is not working properly - has had little use and never used for heating. Replaced the capacitor but its still playing up - not cooling properly - so have to get it looked at when we get to Perth. Techo in Karratha wanted $160 per hr to diagnose the problem then we'd have to wait for parts to be sent from Perth. Am trying to work out where we can put a domestic split system. We had a dometic in the last van and it was also noisy - makes sleeping difficult.

The biggest problem with a domestic inverter split is finding somewhere to fit it ! once that issue is overcome there is simply no comparison.

I know several caravanners recently who have recently made the switch and I've yet to meet or find anyone who is not happy with the swop.

A Fantastic Vent hatch is a perfect replacement for a rooftop AC and probably more useful

My Fuji has been running quietly for the last couple of days and nights here on the Murray where its been 34C today, lovely cool 23C in the van and running all night too !
Couldn't do that with an Ibis, well we couldn't anyway.

2 visits to the service centre and $380 and the Ibis aircon is still not working properly - my temperature is rising and its got nothing to do with the hot weather. Have just sent an email to 'Air Command' looking for another service person in Perth. And temps in the high 30's for the next 4 days. GRRRRRRRRRRR

I have a split in my bus and love it.
Pulls the sleeping area done in about half and hour and then it is that quiet that the other day I turned it on for a afternoon nap and forgot to turn it off till when I came back from happy hours a(about 9.30) and wondered why the bus was so cold.
Power consumption is a lot less than the old roof one. about 20A @24v at start up but then drops right back after the temp is reached.
Have not really checked it as the power is not a worry for me but have seen it as low as 8A total and that's with the computer and modem going as well as the loss from the inverter.
Even outside the fan is noticed from a few meters away.
Cost $1000 installed.
Regards
Brian
