2014 Jeep

Hi Nomads!

We are looking for a tow vehicle for our 2014 Jayco Sterling OB (being manufactured in March 2014) 24.75-2. We were considering the Nissan Navara V6 diesel but wondering about the weight of the van. A dealer in Coffs Harbour has suggested the Jeep Grand Cherokee V6 diesel. It has 3500Kg towing and plenty of guts.

I wondered if anyone has had experience of this later vehicle? We are very tempted!

I recently bought a Jeep GC Overland V6 to tow my new van( 2.8TGVM) when it arrives next year. Heaps of power, good fuel economy and and nice to drive.   I went to buy Ford Ranger Wild Trek, passed a Jeep dealer and called in.  After test driving both there was no comparison. Test drive both the Jeep and Nissan and I would be surprised if you don't pick the Jeep.  I think it would be the best value for money for this type of vehicle available .

Hi guy's

I am looking at swapping my 100 series cruiser(petrol) for a diesel of some sort. I took a 2004 cherokee grand v6 diesel for a run and was quite surprised at how well it went, it performed very well and I would not doubt its towing ability at all, plus it was comfy and well appointed.  I haven't done anything about trading yet as the dealer offered such a piddling amount on the toyota it was embarrassing. So looks like I will have to sell privately first, but hate all the crap that goes with it. Anyway I wouldn't hesitate to buy the new jeep they should be a good buy and very competitive.

Regards Ashley

Something that should be coincided when buying a tow vehicle to traveling around Australia is available of parts and service, I have seen some stuck for weeks because a silly little part is not available, with the more popular brands (Toyota, Ford and Holden) you have a much better chance and they are just as good if not better.

 Gday...

Valid point Dennis. However, any vehicle, of any make, built since 2008 will suffer equally on parts availability, whether in a major coastal town or inland. Even dealers for any particular make only holds "service spares" and "quick moving spares". Toyota, Nissan, Ford, Mazda, Isusu, Jeep, Landrover, VW ... the lot ... will all need to get parts in from their 'main store' for those items that are not normal 'service' items. Sometimes this may only be 24 hour wait for overnight freight - but can be upto two or three weeks if the part has to come from interstate or overseas.

I have met even Toyota Landcruiser 200 series owners who have had to wait for weeks. In Rocky earlier this year, 200 Series in Yeppoon needed replacement waterpump. None in Rocky, none in Brisvegas, and none in Sydney. Melbourne had some on back order - two weeks delay from overseas. The bloke was enjoying his stay at the beachfront van park while he waited.

These days all 4X4s are more complex than their earlier models. All will suffer 'electronic' problems without warning. All will suffer 'waiting for parts' if something fails which is not 'normal service' item.

The "big three" - Toyota, Nissan, Ford - may have the broadest dealership network, but that does not mean they are necessarily any more able to "keep you quickly on the road".

So, research with ya head, decide with ya head and then buy with ya heart (and ya budget)

Cheers - John
